The beloved Christmas novela may have been filmed on deadline, but its core message remains. The story begins just before Christmas with a little money: $1.87 to be exact, of which 60 cents were in pennies. For the writer O. Henry, the pittance was enough to produce his most famous work, a fable of poverty, love and generosity, and probably covered the drinks he drank himself while creating the story at nearby Healy's Bar.

In The Magician's Gift, first published in 1905, two lovebirds, Del and Jim, make sacrifices beyond the price of booze to share their Christmas spirit with each other. His father was a famous physician and inventor whose life was cut short after his wife died of tuberculosis when William was just 3 years old. for picking cotton - and drinking away its troubles. Alcoholism and tuberculosis would haunt Porter for the rest of his life.

At age 20, hoping to alleviate his own chronic cough, a "family curse," Porter left North Carolina for dry Texas and lived with a well-connected sheepherder in Greensboro. William worked on a ranch on the Nueces River near San Antonio for two years, apparently becoming a successful Broncobuster while learning Spanish and memorizing vocabulary.

Two years later he went to Austin, where he worked at various jobs, including cigar salesman, pharmacist, accountant and draftsman at the State Land Office. He also played guitar and sang baritone for the Hill City Quartette, and met and fell in love with 17-year-old Athol Estes, whom he wooed while helping her with her homework.

They eloped and married two years later, on July 5, 1887. Athol gave birth to a son in 1888, who died a few hours after birth; the following year, the couple had a daughter, Margaret.
