Something Went Wrong
The story follows a young couple, James and Della Dillingham Young, who, despite their poverty, decide to give each other a nice present on Christmas Eve. Della sold her beautiful long hair to buy a platinum chain for Jim's antique gold watch. Meanwhile, Jim pawns his precious watch and buys a gem-encrusted frog-shell comb for Della's precious braid.

Della, who had been carefully saving money to buy Jim a Christmas present, was dismayed to find that she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents.
Determined to buy Jim a gift worthy of his love, Della decides to sell her beautiful hair instead. It was a huge sacrifice for Della, since her hair was the only thing of value she owned. However, instead of grieving or regretting her hair loss, Della prefers to "travel on rosy wings" to find the perfect gift for Jim.
Her only concern after selling her hair was that Jim no longer found her attractive, but he was quick to assure the pair that her hair was growing "really fast". Della is the protagonist of the story and the narrative follows her point of view.

As a result, readers gain access to his often turbulent emotions, from pain to joy to fear. After receiving the comb, she "feminized into hysterical tears and wailing" exemplifying her penchant for the dramatic. However, while prone to emotional outbursts, Della also proved to be resourceful and optimistic.
James Dillingham Young (Jim)
After regretting buying Jim's gifts with her meager savings, she comes up with the creative solution of selling her hair. The narrator also highlights her "bright, fiery spirit" when she presents Jim with his new fob, her smile not dimmed by the realization that she still can't wear the new comb.
Della is deeply in love with Jim, and her selfless decision to sacrifice her hair to buy him a gift endows her with wisdom on par, at least in the eyes of the narrator, with the magi of the Bible. For the Dillingham Young family, misfortune and poverty are only a temporary state; while their gift is currently functionally useless, Della knows that her hair will grow back one day, representing the young couple's
The couple's shared hope for the future. James "Jim" Dillingham Young is Della's husband. Although he was only twenty-two years old, he was very thin, with a serious expression, worrying about being poor and "carrying his family". However, despite his difficult circumstances, his relationship with his wife is happy and loving.
Together, they transformed their $8-a-week apartment into a sanctuary of warmth and hope. Jim worked long hours for minimum wage, but Della always greeted him with a loving hug when he got home. In turn, Jim went to great lengths to support Della, and was even willing to sacrifice his precious watch to buy Della a set of beautiful hair combs.
