Gift Of The Chromatic Dragon
Roleplaying Games Stack Exchange is a question-and-answer site for game masters and tablet, paper-and-pencil roleplaying gamers. It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge in one place that's structured and easy to find. My player can use a baby dragon's breath weapon on his sword to deal extra damage to get a damaging sword.
I liked the concept, discussed the general lines of power with the player, and came up with this first draft: As a bonus move, you can use a breath weapon to imbue the iron weapon you're holding with unbridled energy. When hit with a melee weapon, the attack deals breath weapon damage in addition to normal damage.
The weapon loses this charge on first charge if you don't hold it, or after a number of rounds equal to your constitution modifier (minimum 0, ending at the end of the turn you activated it). The PHB could swap out this breath weapon for the Dragonborn, but since the Dragonborn aren't the strongest of the race, I'd like to give that character for free.

How balanced would it be with other standard breeds? The question arose before the new dragon race emerged from Fizban's dragon treasury. I could use them instead, but they don't need any additional support. In this case, this ability will replace any other Breath/Psychic Immunity/Flight they get.

The player in question intends to play a Warrior (Samurai) with "maybe some magic". The issues with other classes (like paladin or rogue) aren't a concern of mine here, but still need to be brought up. Fizban's Dragon's Treasury includes three new abilities that PCs can gain instead of increasing their score, and one of them, the Chromatic Dragon Piece, lets them do whatever your player wants.
Colorful inspiration. As a bonus action, you can touch a simple or melee weapon and imbue it with one of the following damage types: acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison. For the next minute, the weapon deals an additional 1d4 damage to the chosen type on hit.
After using this bonus promotion, you cannot work again until you finish your long vacation. It would be too easy to say that I place upon them unbridled energy which takes the form of breath. To subscribe to this RSS feed, copy this URL to your RSS reader.

It can be found on page xx of Fizbon's Dragon Treasury. Do you think we're seeing a Draconomicon? Because these new spells and powers are all about dragons. Today's Unexplored Arcana is all about dragons. Many people align the 3rd edition big dragon book, the Draconomicon, especially with these new rules hidden in dragon lore.

Even when writing a new gem dragon, along with the new rules for draconic powers and spells, you still get a lot of information about dragons that didn't have much "screen time" in 5E. For example, you'll learn about Sardier, the first-born ruby dragon of all creations created by Baham and Tiamat in the early days of the First World.
Which capital letter should be rotated? And many of the new spells bear the names of dragons from D&D's glorious past, including Icingdeath, better known as Angelocastimilian, a white dragon that lived in the Evermelt region of Regal Glacier. None other than Drizzt d'Urdain, a dragon nicknamed Icingdeath, was slain by the spineless barbarians of the World Mountains, who mistook the dragon's name for a magical scimitar.
How Does Gift Of The Chromatic Dragon Work?
Or what about Roulotim? Paranoid Emeralds are famous for exploring dragons, espionage and variety. But not all are forgotten powers. All of that reveals a glorious new Dragonbook full of trivia and tidbits - but let's forget about that and focus on the cool new spells you can expect.
There are seven in total from levels 2-7: The first is Icingdeath Frost, which deals cold damage but reduces the target's speed to 0 for one minute. Nathir's Blight is a big cube of random effects that looks like predictable wild growth, where you can stun, blind, or make terrain difficult for creatures in the area.
If you cast Flame Stride, you increase your movement speed and deal 1d6 fire damage to creatures near you - which is pretty cool. With Raulotim's Psychic Lance, you can deal 10d6 or more to anyone you know within 120 feet by name (and say it out loud).

If you know their name, the bolt hits the target no matter what. Either way, the target takes damage and is incapacitated - that's a bummer for a 4th-level spell, even if it's nothing on a successful Sei. Summoners will summon Draconic Spirits, a new type of summon we've seen recently.
Is Gift Of The Chromatic Dragon Any Good?
This allows you to summon a creature that looks like a dragon and uses the following status: making it one of the most powerful summoning options at the moment. Fizban's Platinum Shield provides a defensive option that you can transfer from creature to creature, giving them cover, counters, and dodges.
Finally, draconic transformation, which allows you to become a draconic creature that can use a breath weapon as a bonus move, fly, and be blinded. It's a bonus action, but seems a bit odd for a 7th-level spell compared to other area attacks of similar power.
Along with these new spells, there are new powers that can imbue characters with brute force, even if they aren't dragons or wizards. There are three options for each dragon type, Chromatic, Metallic and Gem - and it's a lot of fun. Gift of the Chromatic Dragon allows you to imbue one of your weapons with acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison as a bonus action, giving you an extra d4 per minute, and whenever you take one of these types of damage, you judge your weapon.
you can. You can react to counter damage very nicely. The Gift of the Metal Dragon allows you to learn and cast Healing Wound once per day for free (and using multiple spells after that), and you can cast protective wings to protect yourself or others from attacks.
