To be clear: prayer does not guarantee that we will get our requests. After all, we usually don't know what is best, God knows that; yet prayer is an invaluable first step. You see, I think of prayer as a resource. As an access tool to help me unlock my special gift.
Want to know something amazing? Every born-again Christian has the same resource to use when we need it. Prayer is more than just "asking" for this or that, it is also an "open door" to building intimacy with the Father. For the purposes of this written text, let's discuss prayer in the context of supplication or prayer.
Again, what a blessing it is that we can go to the Father and ask for what we need! In the famous hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" written by Joseph M. Scriven, he gives us such an eloquent description of our wonderful gift.

For example, how can you read the following hymn and not be moved to overwhelming gratitude? isn't it beautiful Yes, my friend, it is, and we are incredibly gifted. Jesus Christ is the ultimate "key" to all the gifts we receive from the Father. After all, all our gifts are because of Him, from Him, and through Him.

When it comes to the gift of prayer, let's talk about three keys to accessing it. Your Heavenly Father, the one you can call "Daddy" God, is the creator of all things, but he cares about you and everything you care about. He cares about you so deeply and so intensely, as well as the nagging stress that keeps you up at night.
No, you are his beloved, beloved child. He hears you and listens to you as you pour out your heart to Him. You have his attention. You have his heart and you have his authority in the name of Jesus. What a true blessing! Not to mention that your access to the Father never expires like a cell phone plan or something, but remains infinitely available by His grace and love.
Before I fully reveal this "key" to this precious gift of prayer, let me tell you how blessed you are to be born in this historic time! As you know, God's people have not always had the blessing of "access" that they now enjoy as Christians.
Your Keys To The Gift Of Prayer
They couldn't just "seek God!" Definitely not! They needed priests, prophets, sacrifices, and to "go between." Not us! We were born in the time of God's grace, so we don't need any "intermediary". We can boldly go to the throne to find grace and help when we need it!
Access to the Father is certainly one of the rare keys to prayer. The best news of all: you already have this key! In any part of the human experience, "freedom" is priceless. Historically, people have given everything and many even died for it. Freedom is a basic human right and certainly a primary desire.

Don't you just love the freedom to do what you want, when you want and how you want to do it? Of course yes! While we may use model prayers when we pray to God, or even stick to what is called the Lord's Prayer, we are by no means limited to these particular words or phrases.
Again, we can fearlessly come to the Lord whenever we need Him. God is also your Father. In it, it gives you the freedom to simply shout "HELP!" when you need to do it! When he saw Jesus walking on the water, he said, "Hmmm...I want to do that too, Jesus!"
This “Key” Was Not Always Available To God’s People.
I love how Jesus invited Peter to join him on the water! Peter was just like us - he followed "logic" and "sight" more than faith. When Peter saw that he was in trouble, he lost no time in crying out, "Lord, save me!" and yes Jesus did!
Peter didn't have time to find a "trial" prayer or think much about what to say. You can see all this in Matthew 14:30. Bottom line: God couldn't care less how you pray; He just wants you to pray. Use your freedom. As a pastor's wife, I have seen with my own eyes the fear many young believers have of praying in public.
I always remind them to pray in exactly the same way in public as they do in private. "You pray for the audience in EN - Jesus," I always say. For this reason, you can pray to your Father in your own words - publicly and privately.

You don't have to try to impress someone else. I have to say, I love the model prayers - especially the ones at the end of devotions. I even write them on my blog. Anyway, I'm not limited to them and neither are you. Remember, the power is not so much in the words you speak as in the power of Jesus Christ!
Public Prayer Vs. Private Prayer
You have the freedom to speak to God in your own tone without any intermediary or any pretence. That's an amazing privilege, isn't it? You can be 100% yourself – blemishes, warts and all! Unlock your prayer life and exercise the freedom and access you have in the Lord.
You should be 100% aware of how blessed you are to have access to your holy, powerful loving God. You should also undoubtedly understand the freedom it gives you to truly be "you" during your prayer. Which brings us to our final key to unlocking the gift of prayer.
I love the parable of the two friends that Jesus spoke about in Matthew 7. Do you? It starts with boyfriend #1 sleeping comfortably in his warm, cozy bed until late at night. He needed sleep. Friend #2 is coming. He knocks on the door in the "early" hours of the morning to ask for bread to feed a visitor who surprised him during the night.
He needed bread. Sleeping friend #1 said, "No way! We're in bed, dude. Come back tomorrow." Jesus went on to say that friendship alone is not enough to get Sleeping Friend #1 out of bed to fulfill his request. But it was friend #2's tenacious, relentless persistence—his constant knocking and questioning (squealing)—that motivated the sleepy friend to get out of bed and grant his request.
