What Are The Seven Gifts Of The Holy Spirit?

What is the difference between the Holy Spirit and the gift of the Holy Spirit? The gift of the Holy Spirit is a privilege — a person who believes in Jesus Christ, is baptized, and is confirmed as a member of the Church — to receive the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Joseph Smith said that we believe in the gift of the Holy Spirit as enjoyed today as in the days of the first Apostles. We believe in this gift in all its perfection, power, majesty and glory. (See Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 97–98.) A person can be temporarily led by the Holy Spirit without receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit (see D&C 130:23).

However, this guidance will not continue if the person is baptized and receives the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Spirit. We read in Acts 10 that the Roman soldier Cornelius was inspired by the Holy Spirit to know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true.

But Cornelius did not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit until he was baptized. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that if Cornelius did not receive the baptism and gift of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit would depart from him (see Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, 97).

The Problem

Today, those who are members of the Church are taught by the power of the Holy Spirit that the Book of Mormon is true (see Moroni 10:4–5). But that initial testimony leaves them if they do not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. They do not receive the abiding assurance that can come from those who have the gift of the Holy Spirit.

What must we do to receive the constant companionship of the Holy Spirit? After people are baptized, they are confirmed members of the Church and are given the gift of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands. The Lord said: "Whoever you believe, you will confirm in my church, by the laying on of hands, and I will give them the gift of the Holy Spirit" (D&C 33:15).

Any worthy elder of the Church, when given permission, can give the gift of the Holy Spirit to another person. However, there is no guarantee that people will receive inspiration and guidance from the Holy Spirit just because the elders put their hands on their heads.

All must "receive the Holy Spirit". This means that the Holy Spirit will come to us only if we are faithful and ask for help from this heavenly messenger. In order to be helped by the Holy Spirit, we must diligently seek God's instructions. We must keep our thoughts and actions pure.

The Problem

The Holy Spirit usually speaks to us quietly. His influence is often described as a "still small voice" (see 1 Kings 19:9–12; Helaman 5:30; D&C 85:6). President Boyd K. Packer explained: “The Holy Spirit speaks in a voice that you feel more than you hear.

.. When we talk about 'listening' to the whisperings of the Spirit, people often say, 'I had a feeling...'" he continued: "This is the voice of the Spirit speaking gently, telling us what to do. . . or what he says, or can remind or remind you" (in Conference Report, Oct. 1994, 77; or Ensign, Nov. 1994, 60). can know that God lives, that Jesus Christ, and that His Church has been restored to the earth. We can receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit to do everything that shows us what to do (see 2 Nephi 32:5). The Holy Spirit blesses us to prepare us for the presence of God. We can enjoy the gift of the Spirit (see chapter 22 of this book). This great gift of our Heavenly Father can also bring peace to our hearts and understanding of the things of God (see 1 Corinthians 2: 9-12

The Seven Gifts And The Spiritual Arsenal

The standard interpretation is that St. Thomas Aquinas worked in the Summa Theologiae in the thirteenth century: The following are the qualities of heroic character that Jesus Christ has only in his condition but he shares freely with members of his mystical body (ie his Church).

This quality is transferred to every Christian as a permanent gift at baptism, nurtured by practicing the seven virtues, and sealed in the sacrament of confirmation. It is also known as the holy gift of the Spirit, because it is intended to make the recipient accept the prompting of the Holy Spirit in their lives, help them grow in holiness and qualify them for heaven.

This gift, according to Aquinas, is the "habit", "instinct" or "nature" provided by God as a supernatural help to man in the process of his "perfection". They can overcome the limits of reason and human nature and participate in the life of God, as promised by Christ (John 14:23).

Aquinas emphasized that they are necessary for human salvation, which cannot be achieved by itself. They serve to "complete" the four cardinal or moral virtues (prudence, justice, courage, and temperance) and the three theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity). The virtue of charity is the key that unlocks the potential power of the seven gifts, which can (and will) lie dormant in the soul after baptism unless exercised.
