Donations from this list do not go to your sponsored child. Compassionate staff at each of our centers identify children who receive compassionate care and their families who need it most. We want to make sure that your donations through this catalog go to the children and families who need them most.
The gifts listed here describe the products and services used in a comprehensive child development program. All donations earmarked for special funds will be used for these projects and for endowment management. We want to be good stewards of your gifts, and when we receive more contributions to a particular fund than we can spend, we use that money for urgent needs.
Donations are requested with the understanding that Compassion International monitors the use of the funds donated. At least 80% of your donation will go to programs that help children, infants, and students with compassion. Some of the funds provided are actual costs based on the needs of the farm, while others, including water wells, toilets and electricity, are averaged per child, based on the needs of the entire charity.

Your gift helps children when they need it most.. Compassion, derived from the Latin root, means to suffer. The definition of compassion is recognizing the suffering of others and taking steps to help.
Compassion involves a practical expression of love for those who suffer. The definition of compassion, according to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, is "a sympathetic awareness of the suffering of others with a desire to alleviate it." The New Oxford American Dictionary defines compassion as “sympathetic sympathy and concern for the suffering or danger of others.”

Merriam-Webster refers to "the desire to alleviate" the suffering of others, while the New Oxford American Dictionary simply refers to the broad feeling of compassion associated with empathy. He does not associate these feelings of sympathy and compassion with any action or thought process, which is indeed an incomplete description.
Compassion Vs. Empathy
The Latin origin of the word "mercy" is "patience," which means to suffer, and the prefix "b." Sympathy, which comes from connection, usually means to suffer together. The association of suffering with another person brings more compassion than compassion in the realm of compassion. However, empathy is more than empathy.
Empathy is the ability to treat another person's pain as if it were your own. Sympathy, like compassion, is based on emotions and feelings, but empathy does not play a significant role in it. The prepositional phrase distinguishes sympathy, pity, sympathy, concern, comfort, feeling, tenderness, compassion, or any other form of sympathy.
Compassion helps. When others turn to the afflicted, compassion moves us to act on their behalf. Author Friedrich Buechner explains what it means to be compassionate: To be compassionate is to sympathize with someone who is suffering and to feel the need to alleviate suffering.
It is a fuller and more accurate interpretation than mere feeling, and it is a biblical interpretation. The Bible does not define compassion as the dictionary says, it just tells us what the word means. Instead, the Bible's definition of compassion shows that compassion is similar to what compassion involves.
