You can still increase your support level with units, and one of the ways to do that is by giving them gifts. There are a wide variety of gifts available in Fire Emblem Engage, here are the likes and dislikes of each unit. Most of the gifts are not available in Fire Emblem Engage until Chapter 12, when

Gift Giving
Once you reach Somniel after Chapter 4 - A Land in Bloom, you'll find that every time you return from a mission or conflict, there are things you find on the ground while you study. If a character doesn't like the gift (like Fertilizer), they'll still get it, but they won't increase their bond or boost at all. The benefits of giving gifts is that it allows you to level up your Bond with another character without always having to fight side by side in battle.
Increasing your support rating from C to B to A gives you extra hits, crits, dodges or dodges while standing next to that character. You'll also be able to use the Circle of Agreement at the end of the game to improve your bond with someone with an A rank, so it might be worth making that bond early!
