Registration only takes a minute. Communicate and share knowledge in one place that's organized and easy to find. I will defend my thesis this summer and I plan to make a gift to my supervisor. I don't know what would be the best and most meaningful gift for a professor from his student.

The main reason I'm asking this is because I'm an international student and don't know what would work best. Usually in my hometown, it is customary to give gifts to professors who stay for a long time. In other words, we avoid giving champagne, wine or something to eat instead of a shirt, pen, etc.
Any ideas from an American life perspective would be appreciated. As far as I know, giving gifts to your PhD advisor after graduation is not a mandatory ritual in the US, compared to exchanging Christmas gifts with families or Mother's Day cards and flowers, which are mandatory rituals.

Before you decide to give a gift and choose one, you should consider your mentor's personality, value system, relationship style, and cultural background. Does this advisor often give and receive gifts from other teachers? From another student? Does he show a lot of gifts or honors in the office?
If so, explore the symbolic nature of these gifts. Are they personal to him? Are they status oriented? Do they reflect certain values or identities? The development of this line of research is fruitful on two levels. First, everything you give him will definitely show that you know and appreciate him as a special person.

Everyone wants to be appreciated for their unique, special qualities and "quirks". Second, you'll be giving something meaningful in the context of your relationship with him, not something generic. My personal opinion is that the best gift a graduate student can give to their advisor is to be a good student, to be someone who is easy to advise, to be someone who listens to advice, to be someone who encourages the advisor on an intellectual journey, and,
most importantly, he finished his PhD on time (or at least quickly). You can also put into words what your advisor means to you in the acknowledgments section of your dissertation. You can also announce a public acknowledgment at the thesis defense. If you feel a gift is warranted above all else, then I would prefer something with low economic value, but very high symbolic value in the context of the mentor as a unique person and your unique relationship with them.
