However, the city experiences high rainfall and dry periods from June to August, which are the driest months of the year. There is no true dry season month in Banda Aceh with less than 60 mm of rainfall. On an average, the city receives a little less than 2000 mm of rainfall per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer require a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Asahi, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if completed before noon, but this should only be available to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses from Medan to Banda Aceh, the journey time is between 9–13 hours. Major bus companies like PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gaja Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a normal seat bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide seat bus.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. Fares are slightly cheaper than buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutaken and Takengan. It will be 20 hours in total.
The airline operates a daily 1-hour flight between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 2-hour 40-minute flight from Jakarta or approximately 4 hours from Singapore. There is no bus facility to the airport. Airport taxi is the only way to the urban area, Rp 100,000 (2019).

When you come out of the arrival gate, the taxi stand is on the left. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gateways. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, close to Medan. Indonesia receives ships from Batam (a common route when coming from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhi-Lee, Banda Aceh port, you can go to Pulau Veh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus). With the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, locals got used to the high fare, but stability has now returned.

Post-tsunami relief efforts included up to 850 NGOs, but most of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. The town center has interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There are also small souvenir shops selling a variety of local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in downtown Banda Aceh. The mall has a food court, supermarket and clothing stores and more than 100 shops. The basis of the Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere.
In the unspoiled part of town, food stalls and padang restaurants are open and fruit carts are everywhere. Uli Kareng is surrounded by cute coffeehouses and offers relaxing rice paddy views along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of town. Three fast food chain restaurants A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut can be found in the center.

As with all travel, all you need to survive in this small town is common sense and a good attitude. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.

Alcohol is not allowed as Sharia law is in effect, although it is still possible. Violation of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law may result in detention by Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule imposed on the offending Muslim. Muslim women are generally required to wear hijab in public.
Western style swimsuits are not recommended except in Sabang. Pick pocketing activities are rare, but be cautious and alert in crowded areas.
