One of the most popular gift exchange games can be played with dice. To begin, each player randomly selects a wrapped gift. Then everyone takes a turn to roll a die to get directions. Play round 1 or as many as you like. The gift you have is finally yours to keep!

It was so popular with readers and my own family that I decided to change things up this year with a similar gift exchange game! I love that it's easy enough for kids to play, but fun enough for teens and adults! The general idea of the game is this - everyone brings a gift (or gifts) and the gifts are passed around the table based on dice rolls until all the gifts are opened.
As soon as all the gifts are opened, the game ends and everyone goes home with the gifts they finished with. But it is much more than that! Watch the video below to see a quick version of how to play AND to see how much fun this dice game is!
Before you play, you have to make a decision. You can either have people bring one, two or three gifts each. If you do two or three, just specify that they should be lower priced items in a price range of, say, $15 for all three gifts.
Fun Christmas Activities
If they only bring one gift, enter your price range where you want it. This is more fun with multiple gifts, but that doesn't mean it still doesn't work well with one or two. I've included instructions below to play it with one or multiple gifts.
When you ask your guests to bring gifts, make sure they know to bring them wrapped. This game only works if the gifts are wrapped. When the guests arrive, place their gifts in a pile on a table or on the floor, whichever works best for you.

You can also decide what kind of gifts you want people to bring - white elephant or regular. I prefer simple for this game and white elephant for this heads or tails gift exchange game, but again, do what is best for your group! If you need white elephant gift ideas, here's a huge list!
If you want a printable set of these instructions, be sure to download the free game file at the bottom of this post! Everyone puts their gifts in a pile in the middle. Before you start playing, ask everyone to randomly pick one gift (or 2 or 3) from the middle and then sit in the circle.
Switch Steal Unwrap Gift Exchange Game
These are the gifts they start with. Alternatively, you can have the game host distribute all the gifts at random until everyone has the correct number of gifts. Everyone should start with the same number of gifts and end with the same number. Choose someone to start the game and give them the dice.
If you are playing with one gift per person, give them one die. Two gifts = two dice. Three gifts = three dice. They roll the appropriate number of dice and take an action based on what they roll. Each die corresponds to one of the gifts in their pile.
The person rolling the dice must choose which gifts to exchange and steal. So for example, if you are playing with three gifts and the person rolls 2,4,6, they trade one of their gifts for a gift from the person to their left (the gift choice of

exchanger), would steal a gift from everyone around the circle (exchange one of their gifts with someone else) and they would choose to open their gifts. If someone is unable to complete the action on the die (eg rolls two 6s and all their gifts are already unwrapped), their turn is over.
Gift Exchange Game Preparation
Better luck next time. When the player has finished all his actions, he passes the dice to the person on his left and it is now that person's turn. Keep playing around the ring with people rolling dice, exchanging gifts, stealing gifts and opening presents.
Note: The player must act on the gifts they have in their possession at the time of the roll, not those they have exchanged or switched to after the roll. So if player A traded a gift with a player to his right, they can't also use that gift as the one they want to open.
The game ends as soon as the final gift is opened and everyone holds the gifts in their hands. If someone ends up with their own gift, they can either switch if they want or just keep it. This is one of the most fun parts of the game because you never know when the last gift will be opened and there is always a chance that your gift will be traded until the last gift is opened.
If you prefer, you can make another roll for everyone after the last gift is opened, including the person who opened the last gift. This adds a little more time to your game, and opening the final gift is not so exciting, but completely up to you!
