The most traditional way to say "happy birthday" in French is "joyeux anniversaire". Play the audio and notice the z-link between the silent "x" in "joyeux" and the letter "a" in "anniversary."
Another very common way to wish someone a happy birthday in French is to say: "happy birthday". If you play the audio you'll notice I pronounce it "bonne" as "bonne"... How come? This is because the next word "anniversary" starts with a vowel. Try saying "bon" with a French nasal pronunciation and follow it with the word "anniversary": you will see that it is not easy to say.

The word anniversary means "anniversary" in French. For example, to wish someone a happy wedding anniversary, we say "joyeux anniversaire de mariage". So why don't we say "joyeux anniversaire de naissance"? I don't know why, but we just don't know! If you just use the word "anniversary" it will default to your birthday.
In fact, translating birthday into French is not as easy as it seems! It's not easy for us to say... We usually choose "le héro du jour (m) / l'héroïne du jour (f)": the hero of the day! Or we would say "c'est ta journée / c'est ton jour!"

What Is Anniversary In French?
Birthday gifts are like everywhere else. It totally depends on the age of the little boy/girl. Gift cards are all the rage for teenagers, but adults seem to prefer a well-chosen gift. If you're invited to a birthday party in France and don't know what to bring, chocolate is a safe bet.
It is possible that the flowers are put in water, which is not always convenient for the host. If you know the birthday boy/girl drinks alcohol, a bottle of wine or spirits is also appropriate. I've been to some really fancy grown-up birthday parties in England and the US.
The reception rooms have been rented. Even the robes are on display. In France, it is common to throw a party for a special birthday: costume parties are always in fashion, and since the French usually like to dance, dancing is also common. But I've never been to a very fancy birthday party in France.

For children, in American movies and series, you see parents throwing their child a wonderful birthday party with magicians, a bouncy castle, etc... I've never seen anything like that in France. Or in the US. Is this my business? Are the fairytale birthday parties of American sitcoms fiction?
