This trick allows you to combine small balances left on your AMEX gift cards (this works for both Visa and Mastercard). It also requires you to have an Amazon account and spend the rest of your balance on Amazon.

The advantage is that it is fast and simple. Note that there is no way to directly combine AMEX gift cards, and splitting payments is difficult and usually impossible to use the exact amount on a retail purchase. You'll want to clean up by removing the tabs listed at the bottom of this article.
