Funny Gift Bags
Funny Gift Bags - I lived in Australia for a while and decided to get up and travel. I ended up in Indonesia looking for waves with a friend. We stayed mostly near town, went to the beach every day. At some point I needed a bag and went to a street vendor.

Funny Gift Bags
I wanted a vegan backpack and found a rather crudely made bag that had this unique design. I took the bag home and people were stopping me on the street in America to tell me how much they liked my bag. I found myself traveling around Sumatra again working on a documentary series about herbal medicine and healing.
One day I came across the embroidered patterns you now see on Banda Bags. I had to know where they came from, so I traveled to the countryside and met the women who created such unique designs. They were exquisite artisans who designed the intriguing and unique hand-embroidered designs, and their craftsmanship left me in awe.
I knew immediately that I had to start a collaboration with these women who seemed to create these designs like magic. My search for this stunning and unique design led me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you've been following the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this is the site of the world's worst recorded tsunami.

Traveling Sumatra, Running Into A Unique Design
The earthquake that shook this area shook the earth off its axis, literally. The ensuing tsunami devastated the area and killed more than two hundred thousand people. I came in the wake of this disaster and it was a decade after it happened. Looking around, I could imagine it happened just a week ago.
I couldn't believe that these beautiful embroidery patterns were born here. One day I thought that I could bring this unique design to the world and be able to help these women who were stuck in a situation that didn't improve for years. This remote area had very little opportunity to revive their economy, but they had something that I knew the world would appreciate.
We worked together to design a cruelty-free, vegan bag that could grace the runway and checkout line. The weekend bag was born. Shortly after the design weekend, we came up with the Nano. This is a vegan leather bag that really makes a statement. Then we designed a vegan backpack that everyone can carry.
The vegan backpack is beautiful and just the right size to carry everything you need. The shell bag is a unique design that we came up with, because we hadn't seen anything like it. There is nothing else like it though. Our vegan wallet takes on familiar shapes, but the design is completely Banda.

A Second Run-In
We play around with new ideas all the time and want to be one of the most innovative vegan fashion and cruelty free bags on the planet. Banda Bags helped increase economic opportunities for those affected by the tsunami. When I started Banda Bags, I made it a business organization to pay fair wages and ensure the safety and well-being of artisans.
I also wanted a sustainable and cruelty-free bag. The weekend bag and all our styles are made from high quality vegan leather. Banda Bags does not use any animal products, so our bags are 100% vegan. Our vegan leather bags are handmade from selected materials that we are constantly trying to update.
We are currently looking for ways to make our bags more environmentally friendly. This means sourcing materials with greater amounts of recycled content and looking for manufacturing innovations. There are all kinds of interesting materials that could one day replace the vegan leather we use today.
We are talking about substances from all natural sources, including pineapple. We're even looking at ways to make yarn out of plastic taken from the ocean! I was right to assume that people would love the unique designs I found in Indonesia. From the first days of working with artisans in their remote village to now, a lot has happened.
