For we have the power both to quench this spirit and to inflame it. The "gift of God" referred to here is a special gift of the Spirit given to Timothy at his ordination, and which, in his case, included the powers necessary to perform the many important duties which he performed.

God has called specifically the gifts of leadership and teaching needed for the position of lead pastor. This "gift of God" was given by laying hands on Timothy's head at Lystra's ordination. In this action the Presbytery of Lystra joined the apostle. (See 1 Timothy 4:14.) We know that St.
Paul often used Christian lifestyles popular among the pagan Greek nations of the Old World, such as Greek athletics, in his illustrations. Could not the apostle have charged Timothy to see that the holy fire of the Holy Spirit was alive in his heart (Wordsworth's suggestion) and told him to watch the flame so that it burned brightly?

Replenish the flame if it burns faintly—could not St. Paul have had in mind the solemn words of the Roman law, "Let them watch the eternal flame of the common hearth"? (Cicero, de Legibus, xi. 8.) What is God's gift in us? Why should we turn it into a flame? And how do we do it? Verse 7 says, "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Since it is right after verse 6, it is easy to see the gift of God in our human spirit.
Note 1 of the Restoration Version of the New Testament explains what spirit means here: “Spirit here means our human spirit regenerated and indwelt by the Holy Spirit (John 3:6; Romans 8:16). The kindled gift of God (verse 6) relates to our regenerated souls. Before we were born again, our souls were completely dead, cold and empty.

But when we believed in Christ, He came to live and mingle with our spirit as the life-giving Spirit. Our reborn human spirit has been ignited by the divine fire of God's Spirit. The precious gift of God in us is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our souls.
Why Do We Need To Fan Our Spirit Into Flame?
It is a gift that we must ignite. Since we have this gift from God, why should we burn it? Yes, our regenerated souls are ignited with the divine fire of the Spirit. But once we are saved, our zeal for the Lord may eventually fade.
We are not as hot and fiery as when we first received the Lord. However, Romans 12:11 exhorts us to "serve the Lord not being sluggish in zeal, but not burning in the Spirit." The Lord wants us to be hot, to burn Him with our love and service to Him.
That is why we must ignite our soul. To illustrate what it means to set your soul on fire, let's say you go camping. To start a fire, first add a few dry twigs, then layers of smaller twigs and logs. Then light a match and start a fire.
The flames will spread, and you'll soon have a good fire. Warming up by the fire in the cold night air, you finally fall asleep. Later you wake up to find that the fire is gone. But you have some live coals. You realize that you don't need other matches to rekindle the fire;
