Fake Target Gift Card
There is a gift card scam that fraudsters use to trick you out of money. The gift cards you see in stores usually don't have a dollar value attached to them. The amount is added when the card is activated by a sales clerk who scans the barcode on the back of the card.
In a gift card scam, thieves print and place their barcode over the actual barcode. When the barcode is scanned at checkout, the amount of money is actually added to the fraudster's card rather than the one you purchased. Another way fraudsters steal gift cards is to take the gift card out of its packaging and into a used gift card instead.
So, when you go to use the card, you find that there is no balance left on it. Gift card fraud has been going on almost since the inception of gift cards. Why? Because the gift card industry is huge. By 2021, the US gift card market was estimated to be more than $313 billion, according to a study by ReportLinker.
