Fabric Gift Bags Pattern
This fabric gift bag pattern comes in many sizes and variations for all kinds of hard-to-wrap gifts! Reusable gift bags will save you time and money on paper wrapping in the long run. Make a few this year and use them for every Christmas, birthday or celebration next year!
This project was born out of passion! I need a bag big enough to wrap a large stuffed animal in! I'll show you how to make a basic cloth gift bag with string or a belt that ties in the back. The string method uses buttonholes while the belt option does not, so it's easier.
At the end of the post, I added a ruffle top to the DIY fabric gift bags for a feminine twist! You will need a sewing machine and basic sewing tools such as fabric scissors and straight pins. This cloth gift bag pattern can be adapted for any size gift.
Fabric Gift Bag Sizes
For a large fabric gift bag, place your gift on top of your fabric and add 3" around and 5-10" at the top. If you're sewing these without a specific gift in mind, here are some sizes to use: These DIY gift bags are great because they start with just one piece of fabric!

Cut the fabric using the fabric gift bag pattern measurements provided. The length or length measurement is on the envelope. Place the measurement listed above for your bag size on the bag. Lift the layer and fold it under 1/2. Mark the center of your bag leaving 1/2″ for seam allowance from your measurement.
Keep the backpack out of the way. Make a 1/2″ buttonhole on each side of the center point above the flap. Use the interfacing on the inside of the bag to tighten the holes. Make 1/2" holes and open them. Each bag needs two button holes for the string to go in and out. Fold the bag in half with the wrong sides including the fold. Sew the bottom together with the open side. Leave the holes and string from the tutorial above to make the gift bag and belt.
The belt option is shown on the ruffle gift bag at the bottom of the column. If you want to add a curtain, make the second bag section the same width as the first. Measure the length as follows: board measurement (excluding 1/2″) x 2. Sew the lining fabric as you did the bag. Then the top panel of the main bag.
Make The Casing
Place the elevator right sides under. The main bag is inside out. Continue to construct the flap that holds the top of the elevator at the seam. Fold the flap and press a 1/2″ seam allowance into the pocket. 1/8″ above the folded flap, 3/4″ above the first line of stitching.
Sew a 1″ seam. If it helps you can turn the bag right side out before sewing the box. Sew the panel above and below the buttonholes. If you use tape, trim the ends of the tape nice and sharp. Use a flag if you want to prevent the tape from breaking.

Thread your ribbon or cord through the string ribbon and tie the ends of the cord or ribbon into a bow. If you want a gift bag with a ruffle top - use this tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to sew a strap to the back of a fabric gift bag if you don't want to use string.
To make the pocket, use the pocket from the Ruffled Apron pattern. Finish the top edge and fold it 1 1/4″ at the top. Press, then sew two stitches at 3/8″ and 6/8″. Pull your elastic (7″) using a safety pin and sew at each end.
Medium Size Fabric Gift Bag With A Ruffle – No Drawstring
The top of the pocket is folded. Now fold around 1/2″ and sew to your bag. To make the back ruffle part, sew two long strips along the long edge. Then sew the small edges. Fold the strip in half so you have a tube with two pieces of fabric right sides together.
