However, the city experiences wetter and drier seasons, with June through August being the driest months of the year. By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a Travel Permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh airport. Sometimes the embassy in Kuala Lumpur can process your visa the same day if you complete all paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses, with journey times between 9 and 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies like PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices in Jl. Gaja Mada, Medan. Prices range from Rp 110,000 for a bus with standard seats to Rp 200,000 for a bus with wide seats.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than on coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines operate daily flights between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1 hour journey, Jakarta, a 2 hour 40 minute journey, or Singapore, nearly 4 hours. A bus no longer serves the airport. The only way to reach the city is by airport taxi, which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi stand is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest (international) ferry terminal is Port Belawan, near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when arriving from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang is no longer operating. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of getting around are the becak (motorcycle taxi) and the labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals got used to being overcharged, but now stabilization has returned.

Examples of becak fees are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. Within the city, it should generally be Rp 10,000. At the height of the tsunami relief there were 850 NGOs, but many of these were non-Muslim religious organizations and the Indonesian government has not extended their permits. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city centre. There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local products.
The Hermes Palace Center is located in the city center of Banda Aceh. The Mall has over 100 shops with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. The staple of the Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes around the world.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open throughout the intact part of the city, and fruit carts are ubiquitous. There are some nice cafes with relaxing rice paddy views around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander at the western edge of town. Three fast food restaurants are located downtown, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel savvy and good wit, you have to be good in this small town. However there are some points to remember. Even though Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities today, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm.

As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not permitted, although it is still possible. Violations of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can be apprehended by Sharia police with physical punishments and public ridicule inflicted on the guilty Muslims. Muslim women are usually expected to wear headscarves in public places.
