26, 2004. The magnitude 9 earthquake ruptured a 900 km section of the 1 fault line where the Indian and Australian tectonic plates meet. It was a powerful mega-earthquake that occurred where a heavy oceanic plate slides under a lighter continental plate. Due to the earthquake, the sea level suddenly rose up to 40 meters, which caused a huge tsunami.
Within 20 minutes of the earthquake, the first of several 100-foot waves hit the coast of Banda Ashi, killing more than 100,000 people and reducing the city to rubble. Tsunami waves then hit the coasts of Thailand, India and Sri Lanka, killing thousands of people.

Eight hours later and 8,000 miles from its Asian epicenter, the tsunami claimed its last victims on the coast of South Africa. In total, nearly 230,000 people died, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. Since the 2004 tsunami, governments and aid groups have made disaster risk reduction and preparedness a priority.
Just three weeks after the tsunami, representatives from 168 countries agreed on the Hyogo Framework for Action, paving the way for global cooperation to reduce disaster risk. Since then, seismic sensors have been installed on the sea floor to trigger early warnings, and many local communities have been trained in disaster response.
The major earthquakes and tsunamis in August and September 2018 tested Indonesia's ability to respond and recover. Then, in December 2018, the ongoing eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait triggered an undersea landslide that triggered a tsunami that hit the coasts of both Sumatra and Java.

Where Did The Earthquake Hit?
Approximately 230,000 people died in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, making it one of the deadliest disasters in modern history. The first large waves from the Indian Ocean tsunami reached Banda Aceh, a city of about 300,000 people, within 15 to 20 minutes of the earthquake.
Few residents of the densely populated area realized that the earthquake they felt could trigger a tsunami, and had little time to escape to higher ground. Traveling at speeds of up to 500 miles per hour, the waves spread as far away as Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
Without warning, the coastal population was washed away by the waves. Many families who made their living from fishing lost everything. The tsunami wiped out the entire community. The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake occurred about 150 miles off the coast of Sumatra Island, northwest of the Indonesian island group, and 31 miles off the coast.
The earthquake occurred on a fault line between the Indian tectonic plate and the Burma microplate, which is part of the Australian plate. The Indian Plate is a heavy oceanic plate, and it slides under the lighter Coastal Plate, breaking a 900-mile-long fault. Indonesia is located between the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 90% of earthquakes occur, and the second most active seismic zone, the Alpid Belt.
