The game was released by Eidos Interactive in June 1998 on two CD-ROMs and boasted both single and multiplayer game modes.

Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3 is a spin-off of G-Nome's previous game 7th Level. The game takes place on the fictional planet of Gift 3 where a war has started between four different races: Scorps, Darkens, Mars and Humans. Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3 was originally developed by 7th Level before selling the unfinished assets to Ion Storm in September 1997. It was finally released in June of the following year as Ion Storm's first title.

One aspect of the game's design is that the races are not "equal": dark forces are stronger, but slower to build; Scorpio balls cost much less to produce, but are weaker than other races; Merc soldiers are harder to control but more accurate when shooting, and humans are the balance of all traits.
