British immigrant John Kidwell started the first pineapple plantation in Oahu's Manoa Valley in 1885. He eventually settled on a variety called Smooth Cayenne that became known as Hawaiian Sugarloaf Pineapples. Several events led to the development of a new pineapple canning industry in Hawaii at the turn of the century. The 1898 U.S. annexation of Hawaii eliminated the 35% tariff on canned Hawaiian pineapple, and made available 1,300 acres of farmhouse in Wahiawa, located in central Oahu, under the new law.

22-year-old James D. Dole arrived in 1899 and settled on a 64-acre coffee plantation in Wahiawa. The harvest was unprofitable, so he turned to growing pineapples and founded the Hawaiian Pineapple Co. It was the start of what would become the largest pineapple industry in the world!

James Drummond Dole received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Harvard University's Bussey Institute in 1899 and soon found himself in Hawaii. His cousin, Sanford B Dole, was then president of the newly annexed United States of Hawaii. Improvements in canning and harvesting equipment quickly outpaced the company's on-site canning operations, and in 1907 he built a cannery at Iwilei near downtown Honolulu and leased more land for cultivation.

He became known as Hawaii's "Pineapple King" when he launched a national magazine advertising campaign promoting his successful canned pineapple. In 1913, Dole-funded the invention of a machine to peel and core pineapples, replacing hundreds of manpower and speeding up the canning operation. Other smaller pineapple businesses also began to grow, but soon Dole would turn the market around.
