These honest brands represent three of the four largest pizza chains in the United States, and each offers a loyalty program (Little Caesars, the third largest, does not have one).
As the weekend begins, we at TPG thought it would be great to discover which program will earn your loyalty by offering the highest return on your next pizzeria. Today I'll give a basic introduction to each program, describe how you earn and redeem points, and then compare those point values to the cost of the menu items you can order for free.
Papa John's — Papa Rewards
Every time you place an order of at least $10 at Domino's (excluding tips and gifts), you'll earn 10 points in the chain's Piece of the Pie rewards program. You can only earn points for one order per calendar day. Then it takes 60 points to get a free medium pizza with two toppings, but you don't have to redeem the points when you reach 60. You can keep earning points and earn MORE free pizzas if you want.
However, points expire after 180 days of account activity. A medium pizza with two toppings is $12.99 for the full menu price. That means if you order exactly six times for $10, you spend $60 and get a reward of $12.99, which is a pretty good 21.65% return on your spend.

But in reality, the vast majority of people don't order exactly $10, and you can often get a medium pizza for as little as $5.99 when you order takeout. This significantly reduces your return from the "perfect" 21.65% shown above. It seems strange not to incentivize your customers to spend more money by offering additional points or rewards for higher total order values, but this model likely keeps the overall cost of the program low.
Unlike Domino's, Papa John's uses an income-based system for its Papa Rewards program, where you earn points based on how much you spend. You earn 1 point for every $1 you spend, excluding tax and shipping, Papa Priority or other fees, although you have to wait a business day for the points to appear in your account.
Pizza Hut — Hut Rewards
For every $75 you spend (75 points you earn), you get $10 in Papa Dough food on any menu item - except alcohol. Points expire after 12 months of no earning activity or redemption and Papa Dough expires six months after you receive them. The program basically means that for every $75 you spend, you'll get $10 cash back on your next pizza order.
That's a flat rate return of 13.3% on every Papa John's order you make (excluding taxes and fees incurred) - not a bad deal, especially considering how easy it is. Pizza Hut's Hut Rewards program is the most complex of the big three chains. It is also based on income, but has a table of awards of different items that you can get for free with different numbers of points.
For every dollar spent (including delivery charges but excluding tax and tip), you earn two points with no limit on how many points you can earn. Points expire six months after inactivity.
