The answers to the question I linked suggest that you don't want to distract the enemy by choosing an ally to help you complete the Support action, so when Fey Gift refers to the "creature" you're helping, that's a value that isn't known until a creature.

it really attacks you. the selected enemy suddenly becomes "the creature you help". How do the extra perks of your Fey gifts (options unlocked at level 3) affect you at this point? For example, let's say I'm a level 3 elf and I use Fey Gift to distract a bandit within 5 yards of me.
Since I'm 3rd level, I can choose one of the additional Fey Gift options, I choose this one: You and the creature you support each gain an equal number of temporary hit points plus 1d6 plus your mastery bonus. When is the time to remove those temporary accents?

Do I get my temporary hit points immediately, and then when my giant ally attacks the bandit, the giant gets a temporary hit? If I can't choose the creature to help (as the linked question suggests), there must be a built-in delay in granting the benefit.
Am I missing something? Alternatively, you can help a friendly creature attack a creature within 5 yards of you. You attract, distract, or somehow cooperate to make your ally's attack more effective. If your ally attacks the target before the next turn, the first attack gains advantage.

that target will be at disadvantage on their next attack within the next minute. too restrictive to only use the Fey Gift with an ally you're helping test mid-combat abilities. Since Monsters of The multiverse doesn't shed more light on this question I wanted to share an answer
I don't have access to the book yet, but I think it's a fascinating question. The basic 5e rule gives you two options for completing the "help" action: You can help another creature by completing a quest. Alternatively, you can help a friendly creature attack a creature within 5 yards of you.
The second option is written for the sake of this question, so I'll refer to this main answer and its source for more details from an official source. Reincarnation in 5e Dungeon Master says that you target a creature within 5 feet of you during combat: you aid a creature on a quest, you give the creature advantage on the check it makes its next ability for that task.
Or you distract a creature within 5 yards of you and an ally's next attack against that creature gains advantage. I think this is enough evidence to answer your question realistically. When a character with a Fey Gift begins to distract an enemy, the character is taking an "assist" action, not an ally target.
