Day of the Dead, celebrated in modern Mexico and among people of Mexican heritage in the United States and around the world, has its roots in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, a ritual honoring the dead that dates back nearly 3,000 years. It was believed that after a person's death, they traveled to Chikunamictlan, the land of the dead. It was only after passing through nine difficult stages of a journey lasting several years that the soul of man reached the final resting place of Mictland. In a Nahua ritual honoring the dead, traditionally held in August, family members provide food, water and tools to help the deceased on their difficult journey.

This inspired today's Day of the Dead ritual, where people place food or other offerings on the graves of loved ones or in their homes on makeshift altars called ofrendas. In ancient Europe, the pagan festivals for the dead took place in autumn and consisted of bonfires, dancing and feasting.

Some of these customs survived even after the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church (unofficially) such as All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, two Catholic holidays celebrated in the first two days of November. In medieval Spain, people brought wine and pan de animas (ghost bread) to the graves of their loved ones on All Souls' Day;
They also covered the graves with flowers and candles to light the way for the dead souls to return to their earthly homes. In the 16th century, Spanish conquistadors brought such traditions to the New World, bringing a dark view of death with the devastating effects of the plague.
El Día de los Muertos is not the Mexican version of Halloween as people think, but the two holidays share some traditions, such as costumes and parades. The Day of the Dead is believed to be the time when the boundaries between the spirit and the real world disappear.
Day Of The Dead Vs. All Souls Day
During this short time, the spirits of the dead awaken and return to the world of the living, feasting, drinking, dancing and playing music with their loved ones. In return, the living family members receive the deceased as a guest of honor during the celebration, and leave the deceased's favorite food and other offerings in the grave or in a house built by the deceased.
Ofrendas can be decorated with candles, bright marigolds called cempasuchil, red chicken combs, and food like tortillas and fruit. The most popular symbols associated with the Day of the Dead are calacas (skeletons) and calaveras (skulls). In the early 20th century, graphic artist and cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada included skeletal figures in his art, satirizing politicians and commenting on revolutionary politics.

His most famous work, La Calavera Catrina, or The Elegant Skull, depicts a female skeleton covered in make-up and elegantly dressed. The 1910 engraving was intended to make a statement that Mexicans were turning to European fashions rather than their own heritage and customs. Later, La Calavera Catrina was confirmed as one of the most popular icons of the Day of the Dead.
During the modern Day of the Dead celebration, people wear skull masks and eat candy molded in the shape of a skull. The pan de anima of the rituals of All Souls' Day in Spain is reflected today in the pan de muerto, a traditional sweet pastry to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

Other foods and drinks associated with the holiday but enjoyed year-round include spiced dark chocolate and a corn-based drink called atol. You can say Happy Day of the Dead to someone by saying "Feliz dia de los Muertos". Traditionally, the Day of the Dead was celebrated mostly in rural and indigenous areas of Mexico, but it has spread to cities since the 1980s.
In 2008, UNESCO added Mexico's "Indigenous Festival of the Dead" to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making the festival even more popular. In recent years, the tradition has become popular in pop culture and has grown in popularity in the United States, where in 2016 more than 36 million people identified as having Mexican ancestry, or partial or full Mexican ancestry, according to the United States Census.
