Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day Visa upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this only applies to Malaysian residents.
There are non-stop buses at night, travel time between 9 and 13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price varies from Rp 110,000 in a wide seat bus to Rp 200,000.
Minibuses can take you to Banda Aceh from around Medan, but the journeys tend to be longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than buses. You can also travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a one-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-hour and 40-minute journey, or from Singapore, almost 4 hours.
There is no longer a bus service to the airport. The only way to get to the city center is by taxi from the airport, which is fixed at Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi counter is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate.

Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other immigration portals in Indonesia. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. Receives ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (normal route when coming from Singapore). The Penang ferry no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.
The main means of transportation are becas (motorized taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals got used to being overcharged, but now stabilization has returned. The scholarship rates are as follows: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000;

At the peak of the post-tsunami relief effort there were 850 NGOs, but most of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also a few small souvenir shops selling a variety of local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh city. The center has more than 100 shops with a food court, a supermarket and a clothing store. The Acehnese breakfast staple is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open all over the unscathed town, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are nice cafes with relaxing rice paddy views around Ulee Kareng, Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of the city. In the center you can find three fast food restaurants, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.
Like any traveler, common sense and a good attitude are key to getting by in this small town. However, there are some points to consider. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10pm.

As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of locally observed interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrest by the Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule imposed on the Muslim. Muslim women are usually required to wear headscarves in public places.
Western-style bathing suits are not recommended except in Sabang. Pocket activity is rare, but be careful in crowded areas.
