I can assure you that if you read and use this tutorial, you will be ready to make the most amazing gift tags for any (yes, any!) occasion. Ideally, you'll read this lesson from the beginning, as we'll cover the concepts in the introduction. In short, these are the techniques you will learn today: Note: In this article, I assume you know some basics such as changing colors, changing images, etc.
I try to cover everything you need to know, but if at any point you feel lost, please check out my complete Cricut Design Space Tutorial. The easiest way to create gift tags in Cricut Design Space is with shapes. If you're in a hurry and want to win something fast, this is an option that will help you get things done quickly.
To add a shape, click the "Shapes" button on the left panel of the canvas and choose the option you want to use (I'm choosing a circle), then repeat the same steps to add a circle for the marker hole. Change the shape (how you want your gift tag to be) and circle the tag opening and place it on top of the shape.
How To Make Gift Tags Using Shapes
When you're happy with the placement of the holes, select both shapes and click the "Slice" button located at the bottom of the Layers panel. Once you are done sewing, remove the unwanted parts and now you have the body of the tag. Tip: Find and create more variations of the gift tag by unlocking its aspect ratio (select it on the canvas and click the small lock in the right corner of the selection).

When you add text, the default setting is "cut"; But the idea with tags is to write on them. To tell your machine that you draw, you need to change the "Line Type" (located on the top panel of the canvas) from "Cut" to "Draw".
Learn more about fonts How to edit text in the text design space However, one caveat here is that if you change the font line type from "cut" to "draw" you will have an outline font. If you want to write in a handwritten style, you should use Cricut fonts.
You can quickly find out if a font has a writing style by selecting it and clicking the Style drop-down menu in the top panel of the canvas. If a font has a writing font, then you know you can use it for handwritten style projects.
Step 1 – Add Shapes And Create The Tag
When you choose to write, your Cricut will automatically change the line type from Cut to Draw. When you are done with the text, place it on the gift tag, select both layers (text and shape) and click "Attach" at the bottom of the layer panel.
Check out how the different shapes will look if you want to use them as gift tags! Although shape labels are quick and easy to create, they can also be quite simple. After all, isn't that why you've got a Cricut? In this step I want to teach you how to make your own gift tags using simple shapes.

Step 1: Add a rectangle (need to open the square ratio), two circles and a heart. Step 2: Change one of the circles and copy and paste it (Ctrl + V/Cmd + V) until you have three exact copies. Then adjust the circles shown in the screenshot on the top right.
Step 3: "Weld" the circles and cover them (two-thirds of the way) with gift tags. Make sure they match perfectly. Note: The weld layer is located at the bottom of the panel. Step 5: Change the heart and the other circle. Use the circle at the top for the hole for the gift tag and the heart for the bottom decoration.
Step 2 – Add Text To Your Gift Tag
Step 6: Select the label and circle and click "Slice". Repeat with your heart. (Delete unwanted pieces) Step 7: Add text, then select label and text and click "Attach". If you want to learn all the things you can do with shapes in Cricut Design Space, check out my handy guide.
If you have Cricut access or want to purchase images from Cricut's library, you can find ready-made gift tags. They are beautiful and there are hundreds of ways to use them! To find ready-to-cut gift tags, click the "Images" button on the left panel of the canvas and type "tags" into the search field on the right side of the window.
Filtering with the word "tag" will give you many options. However, don't let yourself be limited; I suggest you also use words like Christmas, Valentine's Day, Birthday etc. When you find the gift tag you want to use, click on it and then click "Insert Images" to insert it into your canvas.

At this point you can add text as I showed you above, or click Create to delete it. You can also create gift tags using fonts. They are cute, but honestly, I don't recommend you to use this method. I like when you make banners (read my tutorial) because Cricut Access has "Banner Fonts", whereas Brand Fonts in Design Space are premium fonts and I think you can get a lot more out of Cricut images.
Step 3 – Use Shapes To Create Custom Gift Tags
If you still want to use this technique, you need to find the right font first. Start by adding a word, then click on the font menu and enter "tag" in the search menu and choose the one you like. Once you've chosen a font you like, follow these steps.
Step 1: Add a letter and choose the brand font you want to use. Step 3: Select both copies and click on "Align" located on the top panel and select "Center;" After centering, select both copies and click "Weld". Step 4: Click on Outline (located at the bottom of the Layers panel) and hide the letters.
Learn more about "Contour" in my handy guide. Step 5: Add the writing style to the text and other shapes you want to use (change the line type shape to "Draw"). I bought the font and this is what it looks like after cutting. Another technique, and one of my favorites, is to make gift tags by printing then cutting the settings in Cricut Design Space.
