Cracker Barrel in Medford remains open and is the chain's only location in the state. If you don't live near Medford, where can you get your chicken fried steak and biscuits now? The good news — and perhaps part of Cracker Barrel's limited success in the region — is that Oregon has great country-style restaurants, some of them in unexpected places.
Here's a list of 10 country-style restaurants to fill the cracker barrel-shaped hole in your life and make it even better. IYKYK about Cousins Restaurant in The Dolls. This longtime Valley favorite cooks up everything from burgers to turkey dinners to pot roast to chicken and dumplings.

Breakfast is served throughout the day. Beverage offerings include Northwest craft beers and wines by the glass from Gorge area wineries. What people love most about Cracker Barrel is the rustic feel. The cousins also have a gift shop, complete with a walk-up bakery counter and, among other things, cinnamon rolls the size of a tray.

Why go? The pie case alone is worth a visit to The Dolls. Cousins Country Inn: 2114 W. Sixth St., The Dales; Open from 6 am to 10 pm. every day Located on the site of an old logging camp on Highway 26 on the way to the Oregon coast, Camp 18 serves what it calls "logger-style dining" and another popular giant cinnamon roll.
The site also houses a gift shop and the Camp 18 Logging Museum. In good weather, there are outdoor areas to explore. Why go? The antler chandeliers, the roaring fire in that giant fireplace, and the wood-chopping burgers. Camp 18 Restaurant: 42362 US-26, Beach; Open from 8 am to 7 pm.
every day Alice's Country House is a classic family restaurant in a quaint little spot just outside of Tillamook. Highlights on the menu include fluffy pancakes, giant cheeseburgers and, since it's the Oregon coast, clam chowder, according to Alice's visitors' social media posts. Why go?

Whiskey BBQ Burger and a side of fries. Or really any specialties - prime rib, steak and shrimp and so on. Alice's Country House: 17345 Wilson River Hwy., Tillamook; Open from 7 am to 8 pm. Wednesday-Sunday. Cowboy Diner Tree is a total vibe. Available by reservation only, the restaurant offers a rustic dining experience in Silver Lake, the "homestead on the outskirts of Central Oregon" about 90 minutes outside of Bend.
There are cabins for those who wish to stay onsite, as well as a gift shop offering a "unique collection of art, authentic Western handicrafts, gifts and souvenirs." You can take home sustainable, "ethically raised" beef. Why go? The whole experience is bucket list worthy.

Cowboy Dinner Tree: 50836 E. Bay Road County Road 4, 12 Forest Service Road #28, Silver Lake; Opens at 4 p.m. Friday-Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Arguably more steakhouse than diner or country night restaurant, Sailor's is still the place to go for chicken-fried steak and other classics.
Sayler's still offers its 'Full Meal Deal' — a "complete meal that includes everything: relish tray, salad, bread, entrée, side dishes and ice cream," according to Sayler's website. Although it doesn't boast a full gift shop like some of the other restaurants on this list, Saylor's also offers items for sale.

Why go? One day we're going to try a 72-ounce steak. Saylor's Old Country Kitchen: 10519 S.E. Stark St., Portland; Open 3pm to 9pm Mon-Sat, 8:30pm. Sunday. This breakfast spot in Gresham is popular with big - and we mean big portions. A quick look at TripAdvisor reviews reveals four- and five-star reviews for biscuits and gravy, hot chocolate and "mountains of milk cream," and giant omelets.
McCray's Country Cafe: 401 Powell Blvd., Gresham; Open from 6 am to 2 pm. every day Another East County staple, Heidi's is like a Cracker Barrel with a Scandinavian twist — and fresh local ingredients. The menu is huge and offers everything from butter horns to cheese fondue to old-fashioned pressure cooker fried chicken.
Why go? Seasonal specialties are always great on the menu — Dungeness crab omelets, pan-fried razor clams, Oregon strawberry crepes, Hood River beach waffles. Order if the reader is on board outside. Hades of Gresham: 1230 N.E. Cleveland Ave., Gresham; Open from 7 am to 9 pm.

Try marionberry sweet rolls when in season. Why go? Not only are those biscuits delicious, but you get a glimpse of founder Bob Moore.

Monday-Saturday, 9am-3pm Sunday It's all shop, no restaurant - but the food counter at this iconic spot offers some delicious hearty country dishes. There is also an espresso counter, a mini wine shop and a cigar room.
Why you should go: Country steak with buttermilk biscuits and three jojo potatoes. Carry it folded. Wanger's Country Store: 19995 S.W. Stafford Road (at the junction with Borland Road), West Lynn; Open from 5 am to 9 pm. Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday We wish we had included a longtime Truetail favorite, Dot's Chicken and Dumplings, on this list, but it sold out in 2019.
