Gardner-Johnson last played soccer for Cocoa in 2015. After he graduated from Cocoa High School, he played for the University of Florida before being drafted in the NFL in 2019. The group was shown at the beginning of the event. A video of Gardner-Johnson, in which he congratulates the team on their victory.
Cocoa Athletic Director Mark Carstens also thanked Gardner-Johnson for her kind gesture at the event. "His dedication, his kind nature, his selfless nature is unbelievable, and you can carry that with you for the rest of your life," Carstens said. "So, we appreciate Chauncey Gardner-Johnson for everything he's done and everything he's done for our program."
The Tigers went 11-3 in the 2022 season and won the Class 2S state championship Dec. 9 against Florida High 38-31 in overtime. Fans gathered at Riverfront Park in Cocoa earlier this year to celebrate the program's fifth state championship since 2008. Other state titles came in 2008, '09, '10 and '16.
