About 150,000 people were killed in Banda Aceh by the tsunami that occurred on December 26, 2004. Parts of the city were completely submerged. Since then, many aid agencies have been working to help rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) has so far been resolved by a peace accord on 15 August 2005.
Since then, the peace process has been relatively peaceful. In 2006, the province held its first democratic and direct local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was appointed. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with an almost constant average temperature.
The average annual temperature of the city is 27 degrees. However, the city has wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm.
By Bus[Edit]
The city receives an average annual rainfall of less than 2000 mm. Foreigners do not need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa is available on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. If you submit all the documents before noon, the Kuala Lumpur embassy can sometimes process the visa on the same day, but this only applies to Malaysian residents.

There are night buses that travel from Medan to Banda Aceh between 9am and 1pm. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gaja Mada, Medan. Prices range from 110,000 rupiah for a regular bus to 200,000 rupiah for a wide seater.
Small buses can take you to Banda Aceh around Medan, but the journey is usually longer. The price is a little cheaper than the cart. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Takegon. It will take 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour journey, Jakarta, a 2-hour-40-minute journey, or almost 4 hours between Singapore. There is no longer a bus service to the airport. The only way to get to the city is by airport taxi, which costs Rp 100,000 (2019).
By Bus[Edit]
The taxi desk is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry port is Belawan Port near Medan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route for arrivals from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang has stopped. From Ulhe Lhi, Banda Aceh's port, you can go to Pulau We, Pulau Aceh. The main ways to get around are bechak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibuses). After the tsunami, the sudden influx of money made locals used to overpaying, but now stability has returned.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, most of them non-Muslim religious organizations that had not been renewed by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center.
There are also small souvenir shops selling a variety of local items. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has more than 100 stores including a food court, a supermarket, and a clothing store. Ahenes breakfast is nasi gourih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere.
Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open in unspoilt parts of town and fruit carts are everywhere. On the western edge of town, around Ulee Karen along Jl Tengku Iskander, there is a lovely cafe overlooking the rice paddies. In the city center, there are three fast food chain restaurants: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with tourism, all you need in this small town is common sense and a good attitude. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.

As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is prohibited, but still possible. Violations of local interpretations of Sharia law result in the Sharia police arresting Muslims with humiliating corporal punishment and public ridicule. Muslim women must usually wear a headscarf in public. Western style swimwear is not recommended except for Saban.
