There are non-stop night buses with a travel time of 9am to 1pm from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from IDR 110,000 for a regular-sized bus to IDR 200,000 for a wide-body bus.

Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. The prices are slightly lower than the bus. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will last 20 days in total.

At the height of the tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and the Indonesian government did not renew their licenses. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center. There are also several small souvenir shops selling various local items.
Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 shops with a restaurant, supermarket and clothing stores. The main Acehnese breakfast is nasi, salted rice cooked in coconut milk, which is sold in cafes everywhere. There are food stalls and Padang restaurants all over the pristine part of town, and fruit carts are everywhere.
Around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of town, there are some nice cafes with soothing views of the rice paddies. The center has three fast food chains A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with any trip, common sense and a good attitude are all you need in this small town.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's still best not to go alone after 10pm. As Sharia law is applied, drinking alcohol is prohibited, although it is still possible. Violation of local interpretations of Sharia law can result in Sharia police arresting a Muslim offender and subjecting him to corporal punishment and public ridicule.
