I ended up in Indonesia looking for waves with my friend. We mostly lived near the city, going to the beach every day. One time, I wanted a bag and went to a street vendor. I was looking for a vegan backpack, and I found a backpack that had a unique design.
I brought the bag home, and people were stopping me on the street in America to tell me how much they liked my bag. I also found myself traveling through Sumatra working on a documentary series about natural medicine and healing. One day, I stumbled upon the embroidered patterns that you see on Banda Bags now.
I had to find out exactly where they came from, so I went to the countryside and met the women who created those special things. These were great artists who created interesting and unique hand-embroidered paintings, and their art blew me away. I immediately knew that I had to start a collaboration with these women who seem to create these designs like magic.

My search for this magical and unique design brought me to a village in the Banda Aceh region of Sumatra. If you've been paying attention to the news for the past fifteen years, you'll remember that this was the area hit by the worst tsunami ever recorded.
The earthquake that shook the region literally shook the earth. The tsunami that followed destroyed the area, killing more than two hundred thousand people. I came after this tragedy, and it was ten years after it happened. Looking back, I thought it happened just a week ago.
I couldn't believe that this is where these beautiful embroidered patterns were born. The idea came to me one day that I could bring this unique design to the world, and I could help these women hold on to a condition that has not been improved for years.
This remote area had very few opportunities to revive its economy, but they had something that I knew the world would appreciate. We worked together to design a vegan and cruelty free bag that can grace the runway and runway. The weekender bag was born.

I was right to guess that people would like the unique design I found in Indonesia. From the early days of working with artists in their remote village to now, a lot has happened.
