When you enter the Oconaluftee Indian Village, you will be transported back to the 18th century. Surrounded by lush vegetation, your soul will be soothed by the sound of cool mountain streams. Guided tours will take you through art exhibits and award-winning artists will explain Cherokee art traditions.
Meet the Cherokee people in the history section. You can also see special shows throughout the season such as "War Time" and a traditional Cherokee dance. Sit, relax, and eat at the picnic tables with Oconaluftee locals after ordering from the store. Don't forget to pick up a souvenir from the gift shop to remember your visit to our home.

Spend The Day In The North Carolina Mountains At The Oconaluftee Indian Village!
Continue west on US 74 past Waynesville, Sylva and Dillsboro until exit 74 is the Cherokee exit. This will put you on Hwy.441. Turn right at the third red light and left at the next light. Our box office is on your right before next month.

To get to our locations, turn left onto Drama Street at the red light between our office and the Cherokee Indian Museum. Follow the dramatic path to the top. The road ends at our parking lot. If coming from Atlanta, Georgia (about 3 hours): Take I-85 north to I-985.
The road turns into US 23 then US 23/Hwy. 441. After visiting the cities of Clayton, Georgia and Franklin North Carolina; when you get to Dillsboro you will continue on Hwy 441 (left lane, uphill) west to Cherokee and the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway. From this road you will take exit 74, which is also Hwy.
441 will take you to Cherokee and turn right at the third red light and left at the next light. Our box office is on your right, just before next month. To get to our locations, turn left onto Drama Street at the red light between our office and the Cherokee Indian Museum.

Instead, I'm moving a little bit from shop to shop and putting it all together. Yes, many stores carry Cherokee crafts such as Cherokee Indian pottery, baskets and beads; and other locally made items such as dream catcher, dolls and wooden furniture. But you'll be surprised to find the variety of home goods, hand-painted and decorative items, books, CDs, jewelry and unique gifts available throughout Cherokee.
Leather goods were very popular among the Cherokee. Lots of handbags, belts, wallets, hats and purses for sale; and cycling apparel such as jackets, coats and pants. Performers and street dancers perform on the sidewalks outside the souvenir and gift shops, entertaining the crowds of shoppers.

The performances, of course, the 'buddy dance' (with audience participation, below), the 'eagle dance' and the 'hoop dance', are free; but moderation is encouraged, especially if the "owners" are taking pictures. A tradition that began years ago with the late King Henry, who was once known as "The Most Illustrated Indian in the World."

Location: 645 Tsali Blvd., Cherokee, NC 28719 (Across the street from the Cherokee Indian Museum) Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual, Inc. traditional arts and crafts of the Eastern Cherokee Band. Only professional artists show their work here. The organization began in 1946 and today has over 250 charter members.
Each piece is handcrafted, including baskets, carvings, pottery, weavings, jewelry, and more. Just take a look, and be sure to check out the photos in the back to see a timeline of Cherokee's accomplishments over the years. I didn't feel so good!
