The rule with a gift card? Use it before you lose it. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using the card as soon as possible. It is also recommended to treat gift cards like cash and use them in advance to get the full value. Another good reason to use the cards sooner rather than later: the risk that the merchant or restaurant leaves.
Use Your Christmas Gift Cards Asap
While gift cards are often accepted after businesses file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, in many cases they quickly become worthless. Sometimes there is little or no warning before a business closes. "I generally tell people if they have gift cards in their wallet, use them yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, previously told USA TODAY.

The Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one and 21% lost it because a business closed permanently before using at least one card. It is important to go to the merchant or card website and confirm that you are in the right place before entering any information.
If you're not careful, you might find a site that looks legit, but could steal your gift card, rendering it worthless. USA TODAY rounded up the sites to check out the most popular store, restaurant and credit card gift cards. This list is current as of December 24th.
Another way to check for balances is through store apps and some retailers like Target let you add gift cards to app wallets. Amazon says you can see your gift card balance in your account. Even when you apply a gift card to an order or add one to "Your Account" for future purchases, the balance will be saved.

Once you go to your account, select "Gift Cards" and see the balance of your gift cards. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to redeem a V-Bucks Card code. Cards can be traded at Epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. According to Oculus, if you receive store credit, you can check your settings balance in the Oculus app.
