According to a July survey by Bankrate.com, 51% of American adults have more than $15.3 billion in unused gift cards, coupons and store credits. This adds up to a total of $116 per person in gift cards.
Rule of thumb for gift cards? Use it before you lose it. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using your card as soon as possible. She advises treating gift cards like money and using them early to get the full benefit. Another good reason to use these cards soon: risk of bankrupt retailer or restaurant.
Use Your Christmas Gift Cards Asap
While gift cards are often accepted after a company goes bankrupt for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, they quickly become worthless in most cases. Sometimes there is a little warning before closing a business. "I always tell people if they have a gift card in their wallet, use it yesterday," Melissa Jacoby, a bankruptcy law professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told USA Today.

A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults let at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% lost it because the business closed permanently before using at least one card. It's important to go to the merchant or card website and confirm you're in the right place before entering any information.
If you're not careful, you can start with a site that looks legitimate but may steal your gift card balance, causing it to go to waste. USA TODAY has put together sites to check out the most popular gift cards for shopping, restaurants and credit cards.

Amazon says you can check the gift card balance in your account. Also when you order a gift card or add it to "Your Account" for future purchases, the balance will be saved.

After visiting your account, select "Gift cards" and check the balance on your gift card. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to redeem V-Bucks card codes. Cards can be exchanged at Epicgames.com/fortnite/en-US/vbuckscard. Depending on Oculus, if you get a store credit, you can check your balance in your settings in the Oculus app.
