From discrimination by local, state and federal laws. Charlotte Motor Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by current president and NASCAR Hall of Famer O. Bruton Smith. The late Curtis Turner, one of motorsports' earliest stars and another Hall of Famer, served as Smith's primary business partner.
Together, they built their dream of a 1.5-mile speedway in suburban Queens, and on June 19, 1960, they competed in the first World 600 at the new facility. In 1961, like many speedways of the era, the track underwent a Season 11 reorganization that was ultimately pulled despite late ticket sales.
After leaving Speedway in 1962, Smith pursued other business interests in Texas and Illinois. While working in Ford Motor Company's dealership program, Smith performed so well that he began buying stock in Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 1975, Smith once again became the majority shareholder of the Speedway, resuming control of its day-to-day operations.
He is H.A. "Hampy" Wheeler as general manager began to implement plans for the necessary improvements and expansion. Over the next few years, Smith & Wheeler demonstrated their commitment to customer satisfaction by building a facility that continually set new industry standards. Thousands of seats and luxury suites were built.
