Catholic Charities Christmas Gift Program 2022
Catholic Charities Christmas Gift Program 2022 - For 75 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has collected toys for children in need at Christmas, and this year's celebration of giving is no different. With sugar cookies on the break table and Christmas carols playing in the background, they volunteered in an empty commercial space at New City Mall, 1457 N. Halsted Ave., on Dec. 9, filling requests made by Cook County workers.

Volunteers sort toys by age group and gender on shelves, then buy those shelves using requests from Catholic Charities case managers working in Cook County. (Catholic Charities of Lake County runs its own toy drive). Approximately 15,000 children, teenagers and families receive gifts from Catholic Charities each year.
Each child receives two gifts, said Melissa Lucas, director of volunteer engagement for Catholic Charities. Older children, who are harder to buy for, may receive gifts. Donors can donate a toy of their choice, choose to donate a toy from a wish list, or sponsor a family.
The celebration of giving begins around Thanksgiving each year. Joe Hohein has volunteered with the toy drive for 23 years and is responsible for order fulfillment management. He also volunteers Tuesday at the Catholic Charities dinner for the needy at 721 N. LaSalle St. "I try to do something for other people who are less fortunate than me," Hohein said.
It made me think about what God said: 'If you did it for the least of my brothers, you did it for me.' Catholic Charities is where the Gospel message lives, he said. "Look how quickly they act when people get on the bus from Texas.
He welcomes them with open arms and is very humane. The same goes for Catholic Charities. "When someone is down and out, Catholic Charities just jumps in and helps them as much as possible," Hohein said. "I'm just trying to do my part." When playing with toys, he came to the warehouse every day at 8 o'clock to help.
