The wealth of my family is overwhelming. My maternal grandparents worked on the railroad and in the hospital, both of which provided a living at the time. On my father's side I did business for years and saved every penny they could give to my grandparents who came from abroad to have an easy life although my grandmother never worked outside the home.
My parents struggled to find similar jobs, especially after their divorce. My father dropped out of high school and refused to major in business, so he had trouble finding a job that paid above minimum wage. My mom did everything from front desk gigs to working at potato chip factories and beer companies, but her income was severely reduced after she paid my kid.

Walking between my mother's small house in rural Alabama and my father's house in the city felt a world away from my grandparents' lives. Their house has a guest bedroom so it looks like a big house and they didn't blink when I asked them to take me to McDonald's.
Although I now know that my grandparents are not rich, I believe that they are because they give me cash. Whether it's my birthday, Christmas, or I'm bringing a note with an A and B, both of my grandparents would rather give me a card with a $20 bill than figure out what to do.
What my grandparents don't know is how much money my parents can take from me. My dad wanted me to give him my $20 to "hold" for me because he didn't think I was mature enough to fail. When I asked for my money back he acted like he didn't know what I was talking about.

My mother gradually changed. He was told to only "borrow" the money until his next payment. He also told me where the money went: peanuts, jelly, tomatoes, bread and mayonnaise - materials to make sandwiches that would last three weeks. When my mother asked to "borrow" the money, there was no question.
I Refuse To Give Cash To Kids As An Adult
As soon as I gave it to him I knew I would never see the $20 again. I will give this money even if I don't need it because once I told him no, he cried so much that I cried too. In the middle of the night I went to steal money from his wallet while he was sleeping.
We never talked about it. I've learned that when I get cash, it's usually taken away from me. I was afraid to open my grandparents' card in front of my parents, knowing what situation I would be in when we returned home. But if my grandfather gave me a toy, my parents would let me keep it.
Years later, that experience still influences the way I give gifts to the children in my life. Instead of giving them cash, I always ask them what they want and wait for a concrete answer. I even avoid gift cards because unless the gift card is for a store specifically for kids, parents can easily take it.
Although my own experiences with my parents have inspired the way I give gifts to children, it still leaves me with conflict. I believe gifts should be given unconditionally and how the recipient spends their gift is not up to the giver - and I don't want low-income families to spend money, but they feel it is necessary to their survival.
