Carolyn Horn was holiday shopping last December when she stopped at Walmart on US 460 in Bonesack. There, Hardy's grandmother bought three Walmart-branded Visa gift cards with a $100 top-up on each, using a Visa credit card issued by Wells Fargo. Due to the service charge per card, the total transaction amount is $316.32.
Later, at Christmas, Horn gave one card to his son, one to his daughter, and a third to his stepdaughter. The cards, with the Walmart logo on the front, remained unused until Feb. 4 when Horn's son tried to use his gift card to pay for a meal at a local restaurant.
Visa declined the transaction because the balance on the card was 5 cents, not $100. After realizing the card was bad, Horne called her daughter and stepdaughter to warn them that something could be wrong with an unused gift card, too. These concerns proved to be justified.

When each woman checked the balance, they found the balance to be zero. Further investigation by Horne and Visa revealed a $99.95 transaction on January 23rd to Horne's son's card at a Harris Teeter store in Charlotte, North Carolina. On the same day, two other cards at a Food Lion in North Carolina ran out of $100 balances.

Now Horne is trying to get her money back, but Horne has yet to call Visa Gift Cards, which advised her to withdraw them from Walmart. A manager at Horn's Wells Fargo Bank branch — which issued him a Visa credit card — gave him similar advice.
Horne, 72, said she went to the Bonesack Walmart "seven or eight times" to try to fix the problem. A manager there gave him three different Wal-Mart business phone numbers to call. A Walmart worker at one number referred him to another number, but no one answered, Horn said.
Nor did anyone answer phone numbers for other Walmart businesses that Bonsack's manager gave her. Horn identified the manager who gave her those phone numbers as Kevin Dixton. (She also reported the fraud to the police.) So far, no one has been able to use the $316.32 she shelled out to reunite Horn.
So last week, she really turned on you. She sent me photos of the fraudulent card, her Walmart receipt, etc. But I haven't had much help with Horn yet. Kevin Dixton is out of Bonesack on Thursday or Monday when I try to reach him by phone several times a day.
