Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 for a regular bus to Rp 200,000 for a bus with wide seats. Small buses can take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journey is usually long.
Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This will be 20 hours in total. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour flight, Jakarta, a 2-hr-40-min flight, or Singapore, about 4 hours.

The nearest major (international) port is Belawan Port, near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang is no longer running. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public taxi).
Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, people used to be crowded, but now stability has returned. Example of becak rates are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Stop - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. In the city, usually Rp 10,000 should do it.

It is possible to go on a "tsunami tour" because there are still many ships in the country and other monuments dedicated to the devastating day of 2004. There are about 65 NGOs working in Banda Aceh; however, they generally do not recruit non-Indonesians to the area.

At the peak of post-tsunami relief efforts, there were 850 NGOs, but most of them were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the city center. There are also small souvenir shops selling various local items.
Hermes Palace Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh city. This shopping mall has more than 100 stores including food courts, department stores and clothing stores. An Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open all over the city, and fruit carts are everywhere.
There are nice coffee houses with cool rice paddy views around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of the city. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. Like any traveler common sense and a good attitude is all you need to get through this small town.
