An estimated 150,000 people died in Banda Aceh in the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Parts of the city were permanently submerged. Since then, many humanitarian agencies have been there to help rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was for the time being resolved by a peace agreement on August 15, 2005. The peace process has been fairly smooth since then.
In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. The first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was sworn in in 2007. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate, with almost constant average temperatures. The average annual temperature of the city is 27 °C.
However, the city experiences wetter and drier seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a real dry season, with an average of less than 60 mm of precipitation. On average, a little less than 2000 mm of precipitation falls in the city annually.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but they do need an Indonesian visa. You can get a 30-day visa upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process your visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses, with travel times ranging from 9am to 1pm - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices at Jl. Gaja Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp. 110,000 in a bus with an ordinary seat to Rp. 200,000 in a bus with a wide seat.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys tend to be longer. Prices are a little lower than on buses. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will last 20 hours in total.

The taxi stand is on the far left when you exit the arrivals exit. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gateways. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is the port of Belawan, near Medan. Receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route for those coming from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibuses). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals got used to exorbitant prices, but now stabilization has returned.

Examples of becak prices are: Airport - Great Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus station - Grand Mosque: 8000 rupees; Grand Mosque - Penayong: 5000 Rp. In the city, 10,000 Rp should generally be enough. Hermes Palace Shopping Mall is located in the center of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 shops with restaurants, supermarkets and clothing stores. The staple of the Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, which is sold in cafes around the world.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open throughout the pristine part of the city, and fruit carts are ubiquitous. There are several nice cafes with relaxing views of the rice fields around Ulee Karenga along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western outskirts of town. There are three fast food chains in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to navigate this small town. However, some points should be kept in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer today than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10 pm.
