Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before 5pm.

There are non-stop night buses, with travel times from 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price varies from Rp 110,000 in a regular size bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide seat bus.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are usually longer. The prices are a bit cheaper than the buses. It is also possible to travel beyond Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. It will be 20 hours in total.
Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and either Medan, a 1 hour trip, Jakarta, a 2-40 minute trip, or Singapore, about 4 hours. There is no longer a bus that serves the airport. The only way to the city area is by airport taxi, which is set at Rp 100,000 (2019).

The taxi counter is on the far left when you exit the arrivals gate. The visa formalities at this airport are similar to other immigration gates in Indonesia. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It receives vessels originating from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when originating from Singapore).
The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of getting around are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the local population was used to overcharging, but now stabilization has returned.

Examples of becak prices are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5000. Within the city, it's usually Rp 10,000. It is possible to go on a "Tsunami tour" as there are still many boats inland and other monuments dedicated to the devastating day in 2004. There are approximately 65 NGOs operating in Banda Aceh;
however, they usually do not hire non-Indonesians locally. These NGOs include various UN and EU agencies, USNS, Care, Americare, Islamic Relief, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, Australian Red Cross, Turkish Red Crescent, Kuwaiti Red Crescent, French Red Cross , IMC, IOM, WHO, Japan International Cooperation System, Habitat, Doctors Without Borders, Japan Platform, USAID.

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of these were non-Muslim religious organizations and their permits were not extended by the Indonesian government. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the center of town. There are also several small souvenir shops selling various local goods.
Hermes Palace shopping center is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 stores with a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. The Acehnese breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere. Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open all over the unspoilt part of town and fruit carts are everywhere.
There are some great coffee houses with soothing views of the rice paddies around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of the city. Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the city center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all travel, common sense and a good attitude are all you need to get along in this small town.

However, there are a few points to keep in mind. Although today Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10:00. 10 p.m. As Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is prohibited, although it is still possible.

Violation of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can lead to arrest by Sharia police with corporal punishment and public ridicule imposed on an offending Muslim. Muslim women must generally wear a headscarf in public places. Western style bathing suits are not recommended except in Sabang.
Pickpocket activity is rare, but be aware and observant in crowded areas. I lived in Australia for a while and decided to leave. I ended up in Indonesia looking for waves with a friend. We often live near the city, and go to the beach every day.
