There are overnight buses, with travel times from 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 in a standard passenger car to Rp 200,000 in a spacious car. Small buses can take you to Banda Aceh from the Medan area, but the journeys are longer. The prices are cheaper than the coaches. It is also possible to go from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. This is 20 hours. There are daily flights between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hr trip, Jakarta, a 2-hr-40-min trip, or Singapore, about 4 hours. There is no bus service to the airport. The only way to get to town is by bus, which is priced at Rp 100,000 (2019). Parking is on the far left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa requirements at this airport are the same as other Indonesian gateways. Belawan port is the closest to Medan. It has ships from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer runs. From Ulhee-lhee, the port of Banda Aceh you can go to Pulau Weh or Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are becak (bus) and labi-labi (public minibus). Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, residents were used to overcharging, but now stabilization has returned. Interesting fish, meat and vegetables are available in the center of the city. There are also small souvenir shops selling various local items. The Hermes Palace store is located in the center of Banda Aceh. There are over 100 shops including grocery stores, supermarkets and clothing stores. Aceh's staple breakfast is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold at coffee shops everywhere. Padang food stalls and restaurants are open across the unspoiled side of town, and there are many fruit carts. There are some good coffee shops with cool rice displays around Ulee Kareng, on Tengku Iskander Road in the western part of the city. Three fast food restaurants can be found in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. Like common sense and good will, that's all you need to get along in this small town. However, there are some things to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, it is best not to go out after 22:00. Because Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is possible. The Sharia police can punish with corporal punishment and public ridicule on the Muslim who violates the interpretation of the Sharia law. Muslim women must wear headscarves in public. Western swimwear is not only appropriate in Sabang. Pickpocketing is rare but be careful and alert in public places.
