In 2007, Irvandi Yusuf, the first democratically elected governor, took office. Banda Aceh has a tropical rainforest climate with a moderate temperature that is almost constant.
By Bus[Edit]
The average annual temperature in the city is 27°C. However, the city experiences a wetter and drier season, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a truly dry season with an average rainfall of less than 60 millimeters.

On average, the city receives less than 2000 mm of rain per year. Foreigners no longer need a travel permit (Jalan Sura) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. You can get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh airport. The Kuala Lumpur Embassy can issue same-day visas if all paperwork is completed by noon, but this applies only to Malaysian residents.
There is a direct night bus from Medan to Banda Aceh with a travel time of 9-13 hours. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka are located on Jl. Let's go, Medan. Prices range from Rp 110,000 for standard seat buses to Rp 200,000 for wide seat buses.
You can also take a minibus from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is usually longer. The price is slightly cheaper than the coach. It is also possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. Only 20 hours.
By Bus[Edit]
There are daily flights between Banda Aceh and Medan (1 hour), Jakarta (2 hours 40 minutes) or Singapore (about 4 hours). There is no bus to the airport anymore. The only way to get to the city is by airport taxi which costs Rp 100,000 (2019 standard).
The taxi counter is on the far left after exiting the arrivals gate. The visa process at this airport is similar to other Indonesian immigration gates. The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port near Medan. We accept ships departing from Batam, Indonesia (common route if coming from Singapore).

The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Eulhee-ri, Banda Aceh Port, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main modes of transport are Becak (motorcycle taxi) and Rabirabi (public minibus). After the tsunami, the sudden influx of money made the locals used to the invoice, but they have now settled down.
Examples of Becak fares: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Terminal - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penayong: Rp 5,000. Within the city you will usually have to pay Rp 10,000. There is also a small souvenir shop selling various local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 shops including food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores. The Acehnese breakfast staple is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk and sold at every coffee shop.

Stalls and Padang restaurants are open in unspoiled areas of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere. On the western edge of the city, around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskandar, there are some nice coffee shops with soft rice field views. There are three fast food chains in the center: A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Your travel knowledge and good manners are all you need to get by in this small town. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Today, Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities, but it's best not to go out alone after 10pm.
Drinking alcohol is not allowed due to Sharia law, but it is still possible. Violations of locally accepted interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrest by Sharia police, physical punishment, and public ridicule of troubled Muslims. Muslim women are generally required to wear the hijab in public.
Western-style swimwear is not recommended, except on the four sides. Pickpocketing is rare, but be aware and be careful in crowded areas.
