The biggest advantage of the cleric class is that you can heal with miracles instead of relying mainly on the Etus Flask.
With the lack of healing items in Dark Souls 3, this can be a big advantage. However, remember to have a few ash estos sparks or stop at a bonfire every so often to keep your FP meter refilling and taking. If you're a Dark Souls veteran or looking for a significant challenge from an already difficult game, start as a private class.

This is the only class that starts from level one and has basically nothing. You start off with a low damage circle and shield, basically crumbling. You can create your character as you wish, but it will not be an easy journey. If you know very little about Dark Souls, you shouldn't choose a private room.

Healing items are few and far between in Dark Souls 3. You have the Estus Flask and not much else to heal yourself during battle. Herald isn't the strongest unit in the game, but it has good stat balance and starts with a healing spell and a balanced ability so you can use the party right away.
Like the Knight, you start with a shield that absorbs 100 percent damage and a lot of faith, this class is good for anyone planning to use miraculous spells but needs a little more offensive power than a cleric. While he does have a useful healing spell, if you plan on using it often, you'll need to put some points into Attunement beforehand to increase his FP gauge.

Starting as a Knight, if you want to change your armor or equipment you'll need to put some points into Vitality to not be too heavy, but you'll start with the second highest Vitality (Health). If you plan to use dual swords or ranged weapons, it's best to start as a mercenary. Mercenaries start with the highest Dexterity stat of the class, which determines the most extended weapon damage. Having a weapon is especially important for new players who are not ready to take on multiple enemies at once.

Getting a little more damage from your combo attacks is nice, but being able to deal more damage from two directions would be even more useful. Just keep in mind that if you end up dual-wielding, you won't have a proper shield, which makes it a bit superior to other equipment options.
This is a good starting unit, but much better if you decide to go dual-wielding later on. If you want to use some magic, but don't like miracles or wizardry, a pyromancer is the way to go. As a pyromancer, you start with a basic pyromancy weapon and spell, along with a short-range ax and a basic shield.
