A traditional and rudimentary method is to put all your food in a bear bag at night or anytime you are not at camp and throw it up a tree. Bear bags are not transparent and this method has its limitations - bears are very cunning when it comes to finding food.
They can climb trees or shake your bag, and once they get to the bag, it's easy for them to tear up your sweet grass. Once you find a tree, you're looking for the strongest branch, and it should be about 15 feet off the ground. This means the bear can't reach it from below and it won't be so high that you can't run your rope over it. Your food needs to hang at least 10 feet off the side of the tree, so you need a branch that looks great.
The traditional method of hanging a bear bag is simple and requires few tools, however there is a high risk of the bear hitting your rope and bringing its breakfast to the ground. When you are ready for bed or going to bed, collect your food and other smelly items such as deodorant and toothpaste and pack them all in a bag and seal it tightly.
How To Hang A Bear Bag: The Standard Method
Fill your small swing bag and tie it to one end of your rope with a knot or carabiner. Stand on the other side of the rope and drop a heavy bag over the branch - standing on the rope ensures that once the bag is finished, the rest of the rope doesn't go with it.
Expect this to take a few tries! Pull the string to make sure it will support the weight of your food before continuing. Once you've properly routed your rope, remove the rock-filled disposal bag and replace it with your food bag, again using a carabiner or tight knot.
Pull the free end until your food bag touches the branch, then tie the free end of your rope around the trunk of the tree, as high off the ground as possible. If there are a lot of extra cords, keep wrapping them. Time to get into your cozy sleeping bag at night and in the morning you can untie the rope from the tree and bring down your food for breakfast.

The PCT trail got its name because it was popular with hikers on the Pacific Rim. It's a bit more complicated, requires a carabiner and stick, but is supposed to be safer - however, you'll want to make sure the branch you've chosen is tall as your bag will hang a little lower.
1. Put Your Food In The Bag
After packing your food and snacks into your bag, tie the drawstring using the usual method and follow these steps: For this method, you want to attach your food bag to the drawstring using a carabiner, not a knot. As usual, lift your food bag up to the branch until the rope is taught.
Stand on the rope for safety, let it have some slack, then reach as high as you can on the rope and tie the rod to the rope. Then remove the strap and slowly lower your bag. When the carabiner holding your food bag reaches the rod, it will stop because the rod will not be able to pass through it.
This allows your bag to be suspended in the air a few feet below the branch, so make sure it's still about 10 feet up. The other end of your rope should not be attached to anything, it can dangle. If a bear comes across it, its hunger won't allow it to pull the rope and even if it does eat, it won't bring you the food since the bag has a stick.
