About 150,000 people were killed in Banda Aceh in the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Parts of the city became permanent. Since then, many aid organizations have helped in the reconstruction. The long-running conflict between the Aceh Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was resolved with a peace agreement on August 15, 2005. The peace process has been going smoothly since then.
In 2006, the first direct and democratic local elections were held in the city. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irondi Yusuf, joined. Banda Aceh has a tropical forest climate, with an almost constant average temperature. The average annual temperature of the city is 27 degrees.
However, the city experiences wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a dry month with less than 60 mm of rain. On average, the district experiences less than 2000 mm of rain per year.
By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners do not need a travel permit (Surat Jalan) to enter Aceh, but must have an Indonesian visa. You can get a visa on arrival for 30 days at Banda Aceh Airport. Sometimes the embassy in Kuala Lumpur can process the visa on the same day if you do all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysians.
There are non-stop night buses, with a travel time of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices at Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. Prices range from 110,000 Rp in a regular bus to 200,000 Rp in a wide-seat bus.
Minibuses can also take you to Banda Aceh from Medan area, but usually the journey is longer. The price is slightly cheaper than the coach. It is possible to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutacane and Takengon. Total will be 20 hours. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Madan, an hour's drive, Jakarta, 2 hours 40 minutes' drive, or Singapore, almost 4 hours.
There are no more buses serving the airport. The only way to the city area is by airport taxi, which is fixed at Rp 100,000 (2019). The taxi counter is on the left hand side as soon as you exit the entrance. The visa procedure at this airport is similar to other Indonesian immigration gates.
By Bus[Edit]
The nearest major (international) ferry port is Balawan Port, near Madan. It receives ships from Batam, Indonesia (common route when arriving in Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-lhee, Banda Aceh port, you can reach Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh. The main means of transportation are becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus).
Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, the locals got used to overcharging, but now stability has returned. Sample rates: Airport - Cathedral: Rp 40,000; Bus Station - Grand Mosque: 8,000 Rp; Grand Mosque - Penayong: 5,000 Rp. Within the city, normally 10,000 Rp should do it, you can go to the "tsunami tour" because there are many boats still in the water and other monuments dedicated to.

At the height of the tsunami relief effort, there were 850 NGOs, but many of them were religious organizations. Non-Muslims and the Indonesian government did not extend their certificates. There is an interesting fish, meat and vegetable market in the city center. There are also a number of small souvenir shops selling various local products.

Hermes Palace Shopping Center is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The shopping center has more than 100 stores with food, supermarkets and clothing stores. Hacha's breakfast is nasi gori, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in cafes everywhere. Food stalls and Padang restaurants are open in the unsanitary areas of the city, and fruit carts are everywhere.
There are beautiful coffee shops with relaxing views of the fields around Ulee Kareng, along Jl Tengku Iskander on the outskirts of the city. You can find three fast food chain restaurants in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As well as a general sense of travel and a good attitude is all you need to get in this small town.
However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is now safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 10pm. Because Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is prohibited, although it is still possible. Violations of local interpretations of Sharia law can result in arrests by Sharia police.

Soon the speedboat came to pick us up from iboih beach and we arrived in front of iboih hotel to our own port. All the staff were very friendly from the beginning, especially the owner's wife and husband. During our stay they really made us feel special.
