Created with ♥ by the Orlando, FL Diocese Wherever people enter the basilica, they are greeted by the beauty and grandeur of the Catholic faith, not only in the Great Upper Church, the Crypt Church, and the surrounding 80 chapels and oratories, but It also shops at the National Shrine.

The extensive displays of the National Shrine's gift shop and bookstore display the wide variety of items available to pilgrims and visitors. Amy Maloney, who has been running the National Shrine Shops for a decade, is responsible for curating a selection of Marian jewelry, crucifixes, devotional art, rosaries, books and more for visitors to the basilica from near and far.

Today, Amy gives us an inside look at what it's like to work at the Basilica and her top recommendations for what to do and see when you visit. The mission of the National Shrine Shops is to support the mission of the Basilica to maximize our interactions with pilgrims and visitors during their visit.

As we provide Catholic gifts and books from around the world, we strive to continue the beautiful presentation of the Basilica. In addition to the more classic range, the items here have to be touched by someone to be part of the Shoppes range. We test new merchandise to get feedback from visitors and then make decisions based on what they like about us.

This summer, we're selling Catholic socks for the whole family—featuring favorite saints, including Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. John Paul II, St. John Paul II, St. John Paul II. Teresa of Calcutta and many more. These socks bring a new dimension to Romans 10:15, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

As for other fun items, one of my new favorites is a mug that says, "Good Morning, It's God - Today I Will Take All Your Problems Away." Who doesn't want to? National Shrine Bookstore has a wide selection of books, from philosophical works to illustrated children's books and piano books!

I recommend The One Minute Aquinas, which gives quick answers to basic questions. We also offer a wide selection of works by CS. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton and J.R.R. Tolkien. For kids, I'd recommend Jesus and the 12 Dudes Who Did and Songs of Joy for piano (if the parents can handle it!), as well as some updated Our Father and Hail Mary picture books.

The large Upper Church is definitely a must-see, as well as the Chapels of the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Sorrows and of course the Trinity. Try to make time for the crypt church and the chapels of Our Lady of Africa and Our Lady of Lourdes, on the lower or crypt level of the basilica, which are very intimate, prayerful and peaceful places located on the crypt level.

I have many favorites in the basilica, but the Chapel of Our Mother Africa is number one. This cathedral speaks to me in many ways, it tells the beauty of the mother and child, the meaning of the artwork on the door (the tree of life) and the struggle of African people as well as people around the world.

Hours Of Operation

For anyone interested in attending, I would suggest attending Mass, if possible. Masses are something really special during the celebrations, but what really touches the heart and soul is the daily crowd here at the National Shrine. Be sure to visit the Basilica's new website, www.nationalshrine.org, for a virtual tour, and www.nationalshrineshops.com to shop online.

Since working here, my faith has been strengthened with a deep devotion to Mary. Every day when I enter the Basilica, I bow to my Blessed Mother and say, Mary, Mother of God, I pray to you and your Son. I feel like a mother, daughter, woman and protector, she is the greatest.
