Barry Jay remembers the day his life changed because he carried his loyalty card in his wallet for years. The date is August 4, 1988. This card is from a gym in Los Angeles called Sports Connection. Five years of hard living in Los Angeles.

Taxes paid. Barry, who was 25 at the time, started hitting the gym and was soon working their front office. Next he was a teacher. He was a sought-after teacher then. Now he's behind the eponymous chain of boutique fitness centers, with locations on the US coast, London and Oslo.
His company was valued at more than $100 million about 20 years after its founding, and it won private equity funding in 2015.
