About 150,000 people died in the Banda Aceh disaster on December 26, 2004. Some parts of the city are permanently under water. Many aid organizations have since emerged to help rebuild. The long-running conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) was temporarily resolved by a peace agreement on 15 August 2005.
Since then, the peace process has been relatively smooth. In 2006, the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. By Bus[Edit]
Foreigners no longer require a tourist permit (jalan sura) to enter Aceh, but an Indonesian visa is required. A 30-day visa can be obtained upon arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes issue a visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this is only for Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses with a journey time of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh. Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. From 110,000 rupiah to 200 yuan for a regular bus.
Minibuses can take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is usually longer. A bit cheaper than buses. You can travel from Medan to Banda Aceh via Kutakan and Takengon. This will be a total of 20 hours. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour trip, to Jakarta, a 2-hour, 40-minute journey, or to Singapore, nearly 4 hours.
There is no bus service to the airport. The only way into the city is by airport taxi, which is set at INR 100,000 (2019). The taxi rank is on the left as you exit the arrivals gate. Visa procedures at this airport are similar to other immigration ports in Indonesia.

The nearest major (international) ferry terminal is Belawan Port, near Medan. It receives ferries from Batam, Indonesia (common route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. You can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh from Ulhee-lhee, Banda Aceh port. The main ways to get around are beck (motorcycle taxi) and labi-labi (public minibus).
Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, locals were accustomed to overloading, but stability has now returned. There are still plenty of inland and other monuments dedicated to the day of destruction in 2004, so it's possible to take a "tsunami tour". There are about 65 NGOs in Banda Aceh. However, they generally do not accept non-Indonesians locally. There are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets in the town centre. There are also some small souvenir shops selling local products. Hermes Palace Mall is located in the heart of Banda Aceh. The mall has over 100 stores including food courts, supermarkets and clothing stores.
Acehnese breakfast nasi gurikh, rice cooked in coconut milk, is sold in cafes everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open in the unopened part of the market, and fruit carts are everywhere. There are some cozy cafes around Ulee Kareng along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of the city, serving rice noodles.
Three fast food restaurants can be found downtown, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. As with all tours, common sense and a good attitude are essential to get you through this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although today Banda Aceh is safer than many European cities, it is best not to go out alone after 10:00.
