It is possible to get a 30-day visa on arrival at Banda Aceh Airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, although this should only apply to Malaysian residents. There are non-stop night buses with a journey of 9-13 hours - from Medan to Banda Aceh.
Major bus companies such as PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have their offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medan. The price ranges from Rp 110,000 for a standard size bus to Rp 200,000 for a bus with wide seats. Small buses can also take you from the Medan area to Banda Aceh, but the journey is usually longer.

By Bus[Edit]
The nearest major (international) port is Belawan Port, near Medan. It receives flights from Batam, Indonesia (standard route from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhi-Lehi, you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh from Banda Aceh port. The main modes of transportation are beck (motorcycle taxis) and lobby-lobi (public cab).
Due to the sudden influx of money after the tsunami, people in this area used to spend excessively but now stability has returned. An example of backpacker fees are: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000; Bus Stop - Grand Mosque: Rp 8,000; Grand Mosque - Penyong: Rp 5,000.

Acehnese breakfast is Nasi Gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere. Food stalls and padang restaurants are open in the unspoiled parts of town, and fruit carts are everywhere. Along Jl Tengku Iskander on the western edge of the city, there are beautiful coffee houses with serene views of the rice fields surrounding Ulee Kareng.
Three fast food chain restaurants can be found in the center, A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut. Like all travelers sensible and a good attitude is all you need to get along in this small town. However, there are some points to keep in mind. Although Banda Aceh is safer than most European cities these days, it's still best not to go out alone after 22:00.
