Public education, in a democracy, may be the most powerful institution mankind has ever created. A true republic cannot be maintained with an uneducated and illiterate population [1]. In 1779, Thomas Jefferson wrote a bill called "for the general diffusion of knowledge" for the Virginia state legislature.
He presented his vision of a public education. However, beneath the starting points of the bill lies an even deeper idea; that of social progress. A truly revolutionary public education can be a means of social progress. However, this potential for social progress is being brutally removed with Gestapo-like boots as education is subjugated to the global market.

The most important institutions of the world market are multinational corporations such as Exxon-Mobil and General Electric, as well as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. The IMF, WB and WTO, along with massive support from multinational corporations, have all helped to restructure education around the world, in both developing and developed countries, to a more market-based model [
3]. In line with (and usually financially supported by) global market institutions, policymakers in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa demand that students be able to compete in the global market. Education is presented as an engine of global movement because it creates workers and producers of products.

Furthermore, the IMF and WB, as part of their assistance packages for developing countries, require these developing countries to completely restructure their public education systems, in some cases to dismantle them entirely, in favor of privatization and of an education that the world market priorities.
While education must produce knowledge workers, profitable products and profit generators, now education must also be profitable. Standardized testing company Pearson has multi-million contracts with a number of US states and sells educational products and software around the world. They are a billion dollar industry.
The effort to standardize education also had a negative effect on democracy. Truly engaging and civic-based education is being rejected for a more standardized and quantifiable pedagogy [4]. Needless to say, it's hard to learn how to be a democratic citizen just by taking multiple-choice tests and online tutorials.

Education worldwide, the education that was the cornerstone of an enlightened republic, is subservient to the market. And the world market is not democratic; it is animated by greed, avarice and blood. So not only is the potential for positive social change diminished, but we may be going backwards.

Education as vocational training dulls citizens instead of enlightening them – turning them into docile workers and friendly consumers. The common bond that education can foster and must underpin a truly republican polity is fragmented in favor of the atomism that rules the world market.
Forget the controversy about teaching Darwin and evolution in schools, we are de-evolution. We're regressing to cavemen with nukes and drones. And so I now turn with this fury to all quacks, purveyors of false knowledge, friends, greedy people, and all those who try to discredit my profession and change it from the social good that it is.
My anger is a call to other teachers, professors, educators, parents, citizens and all those who are tired of this. I used to inspire my students and still do. But now I have something to give, my anger. My anger is a gift and I give it to you.
